A RAY OF HOPE
Mia took a deep breath as she entered her mum's restaurant. She stared at her mum, who was getting older than her age due to strenuous activities. Her mum was working hard, attending to customers cheerfully. Mia walked closer and hugged her from behind. "I miss you, mum," she cooed.
Mrs. Miller was stunned, and the tray in her hands fell off. "Mia, is that you?" she asked.
"Yes, mum, your gorgeous daughter," Mia replied, picking up the tray and smiling at her mum, who playfully hit her head.
"Silly you, what are you doing here at this time? Aren't you supposed to be at work?" Mrs. Miller asked, unaware of Mia's recent firing.
"Mum, I took some days off," Mia lied.
Mrs. Miller bellowed, "You naughty girl, who did you take your laziness from? I'm very hardworking, you lazy thing!"
Mia chuckled, "I guess I took it from you, mum."
Mrs. Miller smiled and tweaked her hair playfully. "Aigoo, you silly thing."
Mia assisted her mum in serving meals for hours. "What can I help you with?" she asked as she assisted her mother in serving the meals to the hungry customers which they did for hours.
Alvin squealed, "Big sis, you're here!" as he hugged Mia, who was washing used plates.
Mia chuckled, "I guess you want to bath with the soapy water."
"Let me do the washing," Alvin said.
Mia replied, "No, you just came back from school, so take a rest today. You should be glad big sis is around to bail you out today."
Mia pulled his cheeks with her gloved hands, and Alvin chuckled, "Ouch, that hurts!" before running out of the restaurant.
"Where to?" Mia shouted after him.
Alvin replied, "To play football with my friends, won't stay long," before disappearing.
Mia smiled, thinking, "What a lazy boy."
"I guess he inherited that from you" she heard her mother's voice from behind.
"I'm not his parent," Mia said.
"But you are his sister," Mrs. Miller replied, and they both let out a loud guffaw. There was silence.
"Mia, what about Dylan?" Mrs. Miller asked jovially.
"He's doing well," Mia replied firmly, not wanting to arouse suspicion from her mum.
"It's been a while since I've seen him," Mrs. Miller said.
"He's quite busy," Mia said, sighing heavily.
"Hope you're okay?"
"I'm fine, mum."
"How's your work? Hope it's not too stressful?"
"Mum, you worry a lot. I should be the one asking you that. You're always working your ass off."
Mrs. Miller sighed, and there was silence.
"What about Nora? How's she?" she asked again after a few minutes of silence.
"She's doing well, mum," Mia replied as they continued with the work at the restaurant.
After what seemed like an eternity, Alvin returned to the restaurant, looking a little untidy, his hair disheveled. They closed for the day and headed home.
The next day...
Mia dressed in corporate attire, bid her mum and brother goodbye, hailed a cab, and found herself at a very big and famous mall. She decided to seek a job there, hoping they would hire her. She entered the mall and was lucky to see the owner. She greeted her jovially, but the woman only nodded in response, continuing her phone call. Mia sighed, twiddling her dress nervously, waiting patiently for the woman to end her conversation.
Few minutes later, she ended the call and glared at Mia, who greeted her again. "Yes, what can I do for you?" she asked. Mia explained why she was there, and the woman agreed to hire her, making Mia thrilled. However, her joy was cut short when she heard the meager salary.
"It's not even up to half of my brother's tuition fees," she thought inwardly, her expression changing to a gloomy one.
"Ma, please can you..." she was saying when the woman cut in.
"If you're not okay with it, can you please excuse me? I'm a very busy woman and don't have time to chit-chat."
Mia sighed in frustration, in a dilemma. It was either shev accept the strenuous job with a meager salary or go back home jobless.
"Ok, ma, I..." she was saying when her phone rang, interrupting her.
"Just a minute, ma," she pleaded and picked the call, despite it being an unknown caller.
"Hello?"
"Hello, ma'am, is this Miss Mia Miller?" the person from the other end asked cheerfully.
"Oh, yes. Please, who am I speaking with?" Mia asked, her heart racing.
"Calling from BT company, the company you applied for a job at a few weeks ago. Are you still available for the job?"
She stared at the woman, who kept glaring at her, and couldn't believe her ears. She smiled.
