EvieI stand outside the school's newspaper room, nervously debating if i should knock.
Come on, Evie, you got this. I think. Replaying my earlier conversation with Shannon, Claire and Lizzie.
This morning we were chatting about hobbies when i mentioned my interest in photography. Claire immediately encouraged me to try out the newspaper, which led me to where i am now - Outside the door, unsure if i belong.
Taking a deep breath i knock gently. Waiting a beat before pushing the door open. "Hello?" I call out. My voice soft but steady.
No response.
The room is big, with three large windows that overlook the rugby field. Sunlight filters in through, casting a warm glow over the scattered desks and chairs. I glance around but still se no one.
"Is anyone here?" I try again, louder this time.
A faint noise chatches my attention from a small room off to the side. Curiosity nudges me forward. I walk around the corner brushing past a black curtain that acts like a makeshift door.
The room inside is a sharp contrast. Bright red walls and the smell of developing chemicals hits me immediately. At a table covered in photos, a boy stands with his back to me. Wearing gloves and goggles as he dips pictures into the basin of liquid.
The soft hum of equipment fills the room.
"Hello?" I say again. My voice hesitant.
He startles, dropping the photo he was holding straight down into the chemical bath with a splash. He whips around looking at me like a deer caught in headlight's.
"Sorry!" I wince. Rubbing the back of my neck awkwardly. "Didn't mean to scare you."
He sighs and pulls off his gloves. Wiping his hands on a nearby towel. "It's alright" He mutters. "You just surprised me" Gesturing towards the door. He adds " Let's talk outside"
We step back into the main room, and the boy crosses his arms. Leaning agains a desk. "So, what brings you here?" he asks. his tone casual but curious.
I feel a sudden rush of nerves and glance around before meeting his gaze. " I was wondering if you needed a photographer... for the newspaper"
He raises an eyebrow, looking me over. "photographer, huh" He gestures around the mostly empty room. "As you can see, we're not exactly oweflowing with people. So yeah, I could use the help"
Relief floods through me, just as the door swings open with a loud creak. A petite girl stumbles in. Arms owerflowing with papers. Her glasses slide dengerously down her nose as she struggles to keep hold of the stack.
"Cian, help!" she huffs, clearly owerwhelmed.
I instincltly move forward, grabbing half of the papers before they topple over. We lay them out on the nearest table, she sighs in gratitude.
"Thanks" she says, pushing her glasses back up her nose with a sheepish smile.
"No problem" I reply, shrugging.
The boy Cian still stands by the windows. Awkwardly watching the scene. "This is Fiona" he says, motioning to the girl who is now organizing the papers. Then, pointing to himself he adds. "And I'm Cian. You are..?"
Right, I hadn't introduced myself yet. "Evie" I reply.
Cian nods. A small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Welcome to the team, Evie. How do you feel about rugby? Because your first assignment is photographing Frieday's match."
I groan, rugby is not my favorite sport. But I muster up a smile. Not wanting to seem ungrateful. "Fun"
