Evie

The school day dragged on, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something bigger was brewing.

By the time the final bell rang, the tension around me felt like a physical weight. I made my way toward the parking lot, eager to get home and put some distance between myself and the school.

But as I reached the front gates, I saw Lizzie and her group standing off to the side, whispering and glancing in my direction.

Great. Just what I needed.

I kept my head down and walked faster, but as I passed them, I heard Lizzie's voice cut through the noise around me. "Hey, Evie! How's life now that everyone knows the truth about your criminal family?"

I froze, anger bubbling to the surface. My fists clenched at my sides as I slowly turned to face her.

Lizzie stood there with a smug smile, her friends snickering beside her. "What's your problem, Lizzie?" I asked, my voice shaking with rage.

"My problem?" she repeated, feigning innocence. "I'm just telling people what they deserve to know. It's not my fault your parents were involved in some... shady business."

"You don't know anything about my parents," I snapped. "Stop spreading lies."

Lizzie's smirk widened. "Oh, but it's not a lie, is it? Everyone's talking about it. You can't run from the truth."

Before I could say anything else, a voice cut through the tension. "That's enough."

I turned to see Masen walking up, his expression serious. "Lizzie, knock it off," he said, stepping between us. "You don't know what you're talking about."

Lizzie's eyes narrowed, but she didn't respond. Instead, she turned on her heel and walked away, her friends following close behind.

I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, my hands still trembling from the confrontation.

"You okay?" Masen asked, his voice softer now.

I nodded, even though I wasn't sure if I was. "Yeah... thanks."

He gave me a small smile. "No problem. People like Lizzie don't know when to quit."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "I just don't get why she hates me so much."

Masen shrugged. "Some people just like to cause trouble. But don't let her get to you. She's not worth it."

I gave him a weak smile, grateful for his support. "I'll try."

As we stood there, the wind picked up, sending a chill down my spine. I wrapped my arms around myself, shivering slightly. "I should probably get going."

Masen nodded, glancing at the parking lot. "Need a ride?"

I shook my head. "No, Owen's waiting for me."

"Alright," he said, stepping back. "But if you ever need to talk or... anything, I'm here."

His words were simple, but they meant more to me than he probably realized. "Thanks, Masen," I said quietly. "I appreciate it."

He gave me a nod before turning to head back toward the school. I watched him go, a strange feeling settling in my chest.

Things were complicated right now, but with Masen around, maybe... just maybe, I wouldn't have to face it all alone.
