Evie

The morning after the rugby match was tough. I hadn't been able to shake the tension I felt.

The rumors Lizzie had spread continued to follow me, and while Masen had tried to step in, it wasn't enough to make me feel safe.

Shannon, Claire, and Aoife tried to comfort me, but their words barely registered. All I wanted was peace—something that felt further out of reach with every passing day.

After lunch, Shannon mentioned a school trip that was coming up. A part of me was relieved. Maybe a change of scenery would help get my mind off things.

The idea of a trip was appealing, but I wasn't sure if I could enjoy myself with everything that was going on.

Still, I found myself agreeing to go.

Later that week, I stood on the rugby field once again, camera in hand, watching Masen and his team practice for their next big game.

The match against my old school was coming up fast, and I knew tensions were high. My job was simple: capture the game, avoid drama, and stay out of Lizzie's way.

As I adjusted my camera's settings, I spotted Masen, his focus intense as he communicated with Johnny and the rest of the team.

I hated how complicated things had gotten between us. The more I tried to distance myself from him, the more I felt pulled back into his world.

Just then, the ball sailed across the field, landing at my feet. I crouched down to pick it up, when Masen jogged over, sweat dripping down his face.

"Hey," he said, slightly out of breath.

I tossed the ball to him. "Hey."

There was an awkward silence between us, like we were both trying to figure out what to say next.

"Are you still coming to the school trip?" he finally asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, I think I need the break."

He offered a small smile. "It'll be good for you."

Before I could respond, Johnny called Masen back to practice. He gave me a quick wave and jogged off, leaving me with the familiar ache in my chest.
