Masen's POV
The campfire felt suffocating, and not because of the smoke.
Evie had left early, and I couldn't shake the guilt that settled in my gut.
Lizzie's words kept replaying in my head, her smug smirk as she had reminded me that she wasn't done with Evie yet.
I stood up, ignoring Feely and Gibsie's questions about where I was going, and made my way down one of the trails that led into the woods.
I needed space. I needed to think.
After a few minutes, I heard footsteps behind me. At first, I thought it was Lizzie, coming to stir up more trouble, but when I turned around, it was Evie.
She looked hesitant, like she wasn't sure if she should be here.
"Hey," I said, my voice softer than I intended.
"Hey," she replied, her arms crossed over her chest, as if she was trying to protect herself from something.
For a moment, we stood in silence, the only sound the distant crackle of the campfire and the rustle of leaves in the wind.
"I'm sorry," I blurted out, surprising even myself. "About everything. Lizzie, the rumors, all of it. You shouldn't have to deal with that."
Evie looked up at me, her eyes searching mine for a moment before she sighed. "It's not your fault, Masen. I know you didn't ask for this."
"But it is my fault," I insisted. "Lizzie's doing this because of me."
She shook her head, but I could tell she was tired. Tired of fighting, tired of the drama. "You can't control what people like Lizzie do."
"I can try," I said, stepping closer. "I don't want you to get hurt because of me."
For a moment, her gaze softened, and I thought maybe—just maybe—things could be different. But then she took a step back, the walls between us going up again.
"I just need some time," she whispered, before turning and walking back toward the camp.
As I watched her disappear into the night, I realized that no matter how much I wanted to protect her, I couldn't force her to trust me again. All I could do was wait.
And hope.
