Masen's POVThe game had started out rough, but we were getting into our rhythm. Johnny was on fire as usual, and we were pushing through against the other team.
I tried to focus, but every now and then, I'd catch sight of Evie on the sidelines, her camera aimed at us.
I couldn't help it—I was drawn to her.
Gibsie elbowed me as we huddled up. "Keep your head in the game, lad. You're off in la-la land."
I grunted in response. He wasn't wrong. I had been distracted since that night on the school trip.
Evie's words, the way she'd looked at me—everything about her left me restless.
The game ended with us winning, but I barely noticed. My mind was elsewhere as I jogged off the field, sweat dripping down my face.
I spotted Lizzie out of the corner of my eye, and she gave me a sickly-sweet smile.
"Masen, you need to be careful with the people you hang around," she said in a low voice, her eyes flicking toward Evie.
I stopped in my tracks. "What the hell are you talking about?"
She gave a mock shrug, her smile never wavering. "Just trying to help. People are talking, you know."
Before I could reply, she sauntered off, leaving me feeling more agitated than before.
Whatever Lizzie was planning, it wasn't good.
