MasenThe second I watched Evie walk away from me, I knew I had messed up. Her words kept repeating in my head, twisting like a knife.
Your ex-girlfriend ruined my life.
It felt like my chest tightened with guilt and frustration. I hated that she was being dragged into my mess with Lizzie, but more than that, I hated that I couldn't fix it. Not right now.
Feely and Gibsie were waiting near my car, throwing a rugby ball between them like the idiots they were.
They had no idea what had just happened, and I wasn't about to explain it. Not yet.
"You good, lad?" Feely asked, frowning when he noticed the look on my face.
"Yeah," I muttered, shoving my hands into my jacket pockets. "Just tired."
I wasn't sure if they believed me or not, but thankfully they didn't push. Gibsie launched into a story about some prank he'd pulled earlier, and Feely laughed, making a joke about how he was surprised Gibsie hadn't been expelled yet.
Normally, I would've joined in, but my mind was miles away. I couldn't stop thinking about Evie and the way she looked at me—like I was part of the problem.
And maybe I was. Lizzie's obsession with ruining her life had everything to do with me, and I couldn't stand the thought of Evie getting hurt because of it.
I had to do something. I wasn't sure what yet, but I had to make it right.
Later that night, as I lay in bed, the thought wouldn't leave me alone.
The image of Evie's face, the way her eyes filled with hurt when she told me about the rumors Lizzie was spreading, haunted me.
I grabbed my phone off the nightstand, scrolling mindlessly through my messages, until I landed on Lizzie's name.
I hovered over it for a second before opening the chat. There were a few old messages from her, asking to talk, which I'd ignored.
But now, I typed a quick text: We need to talk. Meet me tomorrow.
It was time I put an end to this once and for all.
The next morning, I found Lizzie near the lockers before class. She was surrounded by her usual group of friends, but the second she saw me, she dismissed them with a wave.
A smug smile spread across her face as she walked over.
"I knew you'd come around," she said, tossing her hair over her shoulder. "So, what's up, Masen?"
I crossed my arms, trying to keep my voice calm. "You need to stop."
Her smile faltered. "Stop what?"
"With Evie. The rumors. The posts. Everything." I took a step closer, lowering my voice. "I don't care what your issue is with me, but you need to leave her out of this."
Lizzie's face hardened, and she crossed her arms, mirroring my stance. "Oh, I see. You've got a thing for her, don't you?"
I clenched my jaw, refusing to take the bait. "This isn't about me. It's about you going after someone who hasn't done anything to you."
"You don't get it, do you?" she sneered, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Evie is the new girl, the easy target. People are already talking about her. I'm just helping the rumors along."
I felt a surge of anger rise up inside me, but I forced myself to stay calm. "She's not some game for you to play with, Lizzie. If you don't stop, I'll make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of person you are."
Lizzie's eyes flashed with anger, but she didn't say anything. She turned on her heel and walked away, leaving me standing there, my hands clenched into fists at my sides.
By the time lunchtime rolled around, I still hadn't seen Evie.
I wasn't sure if she was avoiding me or just busy with school stuff, but either way, I needed to talk to her. I needed her to know that I was on her side.
When I finally spotted her in the hallway, heading toward the library, I didn't hesitate. I jogged to catch up with her, calling her name.
She turned, her expression guarded. "Masen."
"Hey," I said, coming to a stop in front of her. "I... I talked to Lizzie."
Evie raised an eyebrow. "And?"
"I told her to back off. I made it clear that if she doesn't stop, there will be consequences."
She stared at me for a moment, as if trying to decide whether or not to believe me. Finally, she let out a sigh. "Look, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but this is my problem now. I can handle it."
"I know you can," I said quickly. "But you don't have to handle it alone."
Evie's gaze softened slightly, and for a moment, I thought maybe—just maybe—things between us might get better. But then she shook her head.
"Thanks, Masen. But I'm not sure that's true."
And with that, she walked away, leaving me standing there in the hallway, wondering how I could fix something that already felt broken.
