The school trip to the countryside was meant to be a break from the chaos of school life. A chance to escape the drama that had been suffocating me.

But as the bus rumbled along the narrow roads, I couldn't shake the anxiety that gnawed at me.

Shannon was sitting next to me, chattering about something funny that happened in class, but I barely heard her. My mind kept drifting to Masen

—his strained expression, the way he had tried to protect me. It wasn't fair. He shouldn't have to deal with Lizzie's mess because of me.

We arrived at the camp by early afternoon, the sun casting a golden glow over the trees. It was beautiful, serene even, but the peaceful surroundings did little to calm my nerves.

We unloaded the bus, and soon enough, everyone was setting up their tents. Masen was a few spots down from me, his back turned as he helped Johnny with their tent.

I was about to ask Shannon if she needed help when I noticed Lizzie standing a little too close to Masen.

She was smiling, laughing at something he said, and I felt a pang of something I couldn't quite place—jealousy, anger, frustration. Maybe it was all of it.

I turned away before I could see more, focusing on getting through the trip without any more drama.

That night, after everyone had gathered around the campfire, Shannon, Claire, and Aoife dragged me to sit with them.

The fire crackled, casting a warm glow over the group, but the tension was palpable. I couldn't relax.

Not with Lizzie sitting a few feet away, her gaze occasionally drifting toward me, her smug smile never leaving her face.

Masen sat across the fire, his expression unreadable. It was like he was trying to figure out how to fix something that was already too broken to repair.

I excused myself early, heading back to my tent, hoping that maybe sleep would give me the clarity I so desperately needed.
