Evie

I glance over at Masen as we walk down the street. The quiet tense silence still lingers from our talk in the park.

I can tell he is in deep thoughts. His shoulders hunched and his gaze is fixed straight ahead.

I hate seeing him like that. He'd opened up to me, trusting me with something deep. And it left me wanting to help him.

He needs distraction. "Hey" I say suddenly, breaking the silence around us. " How about we grab something to eat? I was thinking...Biddies?"

Masen blinks, He looks over at me like he hasn't fully registered what I said. "Biddies?" He repeat's voice flat. And brows furrowed.

"Yeah" I say. Giving him a small smile. "The place isn't too far from here, and it be good to get your mind off things" I hesitate, unsure if he agree.

" I mean, unless you got somewhere else to be"

He shakes his head. "No. I just...didn't think you'd want to hang out after, you know.. all that"

I shrug, trying to act casual. "It's not a big deal. We all have bad days, right?"

Masen doesn't say anything for a few moments. Just studying my face. Then , to my relief, he gives me a small nod. "Yeah, okay. Let's go to Biddies"

We walk in silence for a while. The noise of town filling in the gaps were our words don't reach.

It wasn't a awkward silence, thought. It was light and calm. Maybe because I could tell he was trying to let go of whatever weight he was carrying .

Or maybe because I wanted to believe that tonight, at least for a little while, that we could just be normal. Two people grabbing dinner together.

We enter Biddies. The familiar chatter of the pub greets us. I led the way to a empty booth near the back.

I give Masen a moment to settle in before I leave to make our order.

I come back with two sodas and places one in front of him. "Cheers" I say. Holding my glass up. He looks at me, the hint of a smile on his lips.

And clink his glass against mine.

"Thanks" he says after a sip. His voice is quiet but there is a touch of gratitude in there. "I didn't think I needed this, but... I do"

I smile back feeling relieved that my plan worked. "Sometimes all you need is a good meal and some company. I think that's what friends are for."

As the night went on, the conversation flowed more easily. And the tension in his face began to ease.

Maybe, for tonight, I could help him forget.
