0016. | HER PULSE IS CLEAR
RUSHING IN HER EARS

"This way!" Rachel yelled.

Annabeth looked like she wanted to argue but nothing came out other than panting. Mrs O'Leary had a sixth sense to Rachel's navigation and she was bounding along with great speed. It was a struggle to keep up. Crossroads appeared and went, no longer a problem to them with Rachel there. She whipped around corners and didn't hesitate. Only once did she warn them to drop and then, they all missed an axe coming for their heads. They continued running. They lost track of their position, of their route, how they had come to get where they were, which way they'd come from.

They didn't stop until they came to a room made of marble the size of a gymnasium. The outer wall was held up by mighty columns that Annabeth marvelled for a moment.

Percy stayed by the doorway, lingering and listening for sounds of pursuit. He heard nothing. Luke's army were disorganised. They had lost them in the maze.

Ethan collapsed on the floor, sweating and heaving in his armour. "You people are crazy."

Annabeth turned to him. "I remember you! You were one of the undetermined kids in Hermes Cabin, years ago."

Ethan gave her a cold look. Octavia noticed.

She was coaxing Mrs O' Leary into a stoop. Brad was still draped over the Hellhound's back. He had managed to make it with them. If his corpse had suffered any bruising, it was difficult to distinguish amongst the rest. Once Mrs O'Leary was laying down, Octavia heaved Brad from her back and rested him on the ground.

The only sign she wasn't okay was her heaving chest filling with panicked breaths that she was steadying. Otherwise, her face was expressionless. She knelt in front of the body, soundless.

Any retort Ethan might have given to Annabeth died as he looked at the body.

Percy sensed Rachel come to his side. His glanced over her body to check she was all right. Other than being out of breath, she seemed unharmed. She looked more concerned about him, if anything. Only then did he remember the wound weeping at his ribs and the harsh triangle which Luke had cut from his bicep. He definitely needed patching up.

"Are you okay?" He asked her quietly.

She nodded numbly, not really paying much attention to him. Her eyes were drawn to Octavia kneeling next to Brad. "Who is he?"

Percy's mouth went dry. "His name was Brad. A son of Ares, the War God. He tried to give me a swirly once, when I was twelve."

A surprised smile cracked onto her face, then disappeared as she remembered she was looking at a corpse. It only then occurred to Percy that this might have been the first dead body Rachel had ever seen.
