"Here me out. What if we aren't actually real? What if we are living inside a video game, controlled by, like, creepy scientist people...?" I said in spooky voice, wiggling my fingers.
"Please" scoffed Loki.
"Well excuse me, mister godly pants, how are you so sure that you exist?" I teased him.
"I suppose you are not familiar with the basic concept: 'I think, therefore I am' " he said boringly, getting back to his book.
"Come on, characters in video games can't possibly be this handsome" said Tony, gesturing towards himself.
"You obviously haven't seen Chris Redfield in Resident Evil" I commented.
"Who is t-" he started, but got interrupted by a loud, ear-piercing sound, the loudest alarm I have ever heard. What was this?
I startled and dropped to the ground, covering my ears, the sound echoing through my brain.
"JARVIS!" Tony screamed, over the incredibly loud noise.
"Sir, the fire alarm turned on, but I am not detecting any trace of carbon dioxide. It appears that the smoke detector needs new batteries. Shall I turn it off?"
"YES, PLEASE!" he yelled again in anger. The sound stopped.
The others rubbed their ears and chuckled slightly, but I was still curled up on the floor. This sound reminded me of HYDRA, and I didn't know why. I felt my body weaken while I tried to stand up. I had to run. My breath was shallow and painful, my chest tightened with shooting pain, and I gripped my sweaty shirt, trying to expand my lungs.
"Kid, are you ok?"
"Hannah!"
I heard their voices, I saw their concerned faces as they ran towards me. HYDRA was going to take me, I had to run away, I wasn't safe here. I tried to stand up again, but my legs were shaking, causing me to fall on my knees. I felt my face hot and wet form the tears. I had to get away.
"Kid!! Hey!" Tony shook my shoulders, trying to look at my face.
"What's wrong?" asked Nat.
"I can't- Just- have to...I can't breathe...help...Can't breathe-" I blurted. The words that came out of my mouth made no sense, as if they were made out of rubber, clinging to my tongue and swirling through my mouth.
"Hey, hey! Look at me!" I hear Tony.
"Hannah, it's okay, you're safe" Wanda said.
"N-no...they're coming...".
"Nobody's coming, it was the fire alarm" I hear Steve.
"I have to go-" I tried to run, but Clint garbed my arms tightly.
"Hey, it's fine, kid, it's us!"
"Get away from me!" I spit out the words. I didn't want anyone to see me like this, being vulnerable. Not anymore. He let me go, a shocked look on his face.
"Calm down! We're on your side, remember?" Tony said firmly. I tried to hit him, but he grabbed my hands as I squirmed.
"Hey, hey! Look at me! You're ok"
I looked at him and inhaled sharply, the pain in my chest making me sick.
"Let me go!!" I screamed.
He stared at my tear-stained face for while, while I panted in despair, gripping his hands. Suddenly, I hear Loki's soft voice:
"Look over here, little mortal".
I quickly turned around, almost collapsing from the weakness in my body.
Loki waved his hands slowly, and small fireworks appeared in his palm, bursting with color and magic. They popped and sparkled, reflecting into my wet eyes. My breathing slowed down and my body relaxed, as I watched the beautiful fireworks.
I felt a warmness spreading through my body and smiled. I inhaled deeply, before looking up at Loki. His face remained neutral, but the flicker in his eyes was worth more than a smile.
"Thank you" I whispered, overwhelmed by his kindness. The others looked at each other and smiled softly.
"I'm sorry" I told them.
"No, don't worry" Wanda hugged me, and so did the others. Except Loki, who got back to his book like nothing happened.
"I'm really sorry" I sniffed.
"Stop that. Are you ok?" asked Tony.
I nodded slightly. I pulled out of the group hug and turned towards Loki.
"...Loki?" I mumbled, unsure whether to bother him or not.
He looked up, calmly.
"Why did you do that?" I asked.
He thought carefully about his answer.
"It felt nice to be the one who cures another one's pain, not the one who causes it".
I tried not to cry.
