Enid returned to her dorm later that evening. Wednesday was sitting at her desk, but she wasn't doing anything, so Enid smiled. "Hey, Wends." She walked over to her own side of the room. "So I was thinking about the whole dance thing. And I know it's not your thing, so what if instead we just—"

"We need to break up," Wednesday cut Enid off.

Enid froze as her heart dropped in her chest. She slowly turned to face Wednesday, but she was still sat in her chair, back to Enid. "What?" She asked softly and shakily.

"You heard me."

Enid licked her dry lips, each heartbeat feeling like someone taking a sledgehammer to her chest. "But why?"

"Because we don't work."

Tears were now welling in her eyes. "The fuck is that supposed to mean?"

Wednesday gritted her teeth and forced herself to continue. "You're a gazelle, I'm a wounded fawn. I need to let you go so you can run with the pack."

The tears rolled down her cheeks, and her voice came out a bit strained. "I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. What is going on, Wednesday?"

Tears began to well in Wednesday's eyes at hearing the pain in Enid's voice. "I don't deserve you. I'm a terrible girlfriend. So just go be with Wanda and forget about me."

Enid had no idea where any of this was coming from, so she addressed each statement. "Yes you do, no you're not, and hell no! Where is this coming from?"

"The truth."

"The fuck it is! You can't just break up with me for no reason!"

Wednesday finally spun around and stood up to face her, tears rolling down her own cheeks. "You're going to break up with me anyway!"

"Why the hell do you think that!"

"I overheard you talking to Wanda, Yoko, and Divina! How I never do anything for you!"

"So your solution is to break up with me? That doesn't even make sense! If you wanna be a better girlfriend, Wednesday, then be a better girlfriend!"

"I don't know how!"

"Then learn! Talk to me! Talk to Wanda! Do anything except this!"

It was silent for a moment as they both panted for air. Wednesday still wasn't sure that Enid wasn't going to dump her herself, so she tested the waters, so to speak. "I'm still not going to the dance."

"And that's fine!" Enid's voice was thick with sobs, as she held her hands pleadingly in front of her. "I don't care about the fucking dance if it means you're going to break up with me! Just please..." she dropped to her knees as she cried and doubled over as she moved her right hand to clench her chest. The pain hurt so much. The heartache of thinking she was losing Wednesday basically quadrupled the mating pain. "Don't leave me..." she could barely get the words out.
