The next day at dawn, Wanda left her demiplane. She came out the same place she entered, an outside wall of the school. The rose-pink light of dawn began to light up the sky, just a few rays filtering the darkness out. Clouds were spread out sparsely and almost glowing as the light hit them. The breeze blew just enough to make the autumn leaves ruffle. It felt good on her warm skin. The sight was absolutely beautiful.
And it pissed Wanda off. There was nothing beautiful about today. She ran off into the woods, shouting "inspiratione" as she threw blast after blast of swirling purple and gold energy. They slammed into trees, making indents and breaking bark off, making splinters fly out. Some missed wildly and just sailed a hundred and twenty feet into the air before dissipating. She hit boulders as well, breaking off a bit of rock and leaving cracks in it.
She didn't stop until she was completely out of breath and collapsed onto her hands and knees to catch her breath. She panted for air until her breathing began to calm back down. Then her hands clawed into the dirt and formed fists a she just let out a scream of anger and anguish. The leaves rustled as birds flew away from the area. After a good ten seconds, her scream died down and she was left panting again.
Then she raised her right fist and punched the hard ground. Only she felt nothing. So she punched it again as hard as she good. Still nothing. "Damnit! Damnit! Damnit!" She punched the ground with each curse over and over, just wanting to feel something. But she couldn't. No matter how hard she hit the ground, no pain came to her hand. She finally stopped and leaned her forehead on the ground. "Fuck you!" She yelled at the ground as if it would reach Phelros in the seventh circle of hell. She stayed there for an extra moment to catch her breath, but before she could stand back up, her consciousness zoomed down to Phelros' throne room.
He stood right in front of her, looking down at her with sad golden eyes. "This has to stop, my child. You need to move past this. A hundred years is a long time to get nowhere."
She glared up at him. "It's also a long time to do nothing about it. Why do you care now all of a sudden?"
"I started caring for you about fifty years ago. That grew into a familial love about twenty years ago. I never did anything because I thought that with time, you would move on yourself. I thought that was what you mortals did. You always seemed fine through the years. I fell for your mask, but I now know I was wrong. And I'm sorry I haven't tried being here for you on this day more."
Wanda's hands balled into fists. "Oh how sweet," she spoke sarcastically. "The immortal adopts the orphan. Well, you're not my fucking dad because he's dead." She knew she was being uncharacteristically mean. Because in a lot of ways. Phelros was her dad. He's raised her since she was seven, even if he only started actually caring for her when she was twelve. He was still the only one who did the job after her parents died. "So just send me back. It's not like I can hurt myself."
"And yet you keep trying. You should return to Enid and Wednesday if you don't want to talk to me. They can help you."
"I don't need help!" She tried to shove him away, but of course he didn't budge. "They did!"
"And so did you."
"Yeah, well, I got it!" Tears began to fill her eyes. "So why didn't they! Why didn't I die first!"
Phelros frowned. "I don't know why things happen. But have I ever told you why I showed myself to you that night?"
"Because I read the entreaty text, who cares?"
"Read is a strong word. You didn't pronounce a single word right except for my name. But names have power. Once said, we're alerted. I decided to see who was speaking my name, and that's when I saw you. This small child on deaths door about to be burned alive. You didn't deserve to die so young...no one does...and so I showed myself to you. If I could've saved your sister too, I would have. Just like you would have. But you couldn't. That doesn't make it your fault."
