The group reappeared standing on a round white dais, braziers of white fire boxing it in except for where they were supposed to move forward. Engraved on the dais was a swirl with squiggly lines coming out of it, looking like a type of sun. Straight ahead was a line of souls waiting to go to a desk where demons were working to help the souls and tell them where to go. And it wasn't the only line and desk. There were dozens spread out to the right and left, all with souls waiting their turn. The demons working were of various colors, looks, and sizes. Some were blue, some were pink, some were red, some had wings, all had horns, and some had tails.

The sky was an endless white and with an eternal soft glow lighting the layer. There were modern white buildings past the desk, creating a residential area for the souls to live. There were also larger buildings where Wednesday assumed the therapy took place. Rivers ran through the residential area and in the far distance, forty miles away, was a giant white and gold palace made of tall towers and spires where Wednesday knew Taana The Patient lived and oversaw everything. Around her palace were tall walls to separate the souls of the departed from the demons city. Behind them, a hundred feet away, the Acheron river flowed and circled the edge of the level. Wednesday knew it turns into a waterfall behind Taana's palace and goes down to the second layer of hell. That's where they need to go.

"You sure this is hell?" Ajax asked as he looked around gobsmacked.

"I'd think it heaven or something if it weren't for the demons up ahead," Bianca admitted.

"The first circle of hell is meant for people who were mostly good in their lives but have some problems to work through," Wednesday explained. "They're sent here for therapy before they can go to paradise. It truly is hell."

Enid rolled her eyes with a small smile. Of course Wednesday thinks therapy is hell. "Let's get moving. But how are we going to get past the desk demons?"

Wednesday looked to the right and left as more souls arrived on the dais and moved around them to the lines. The desks and lines seemed to stretch to the ends of the circle. There didn't seem to be a way to sneak by them. She looked back at the Acheron river that she knew circled the edge of the layer and would take them straight to the palace. But it's called the river of woe and misery for a reason. Being in any of the rivers in hell for long periods of time would be a terrible idea. She looked straight ahead at the desks again.

"We'll just have to run," Wednesday answered.

Bianca narrowed her eyes at her. "What happened to the stealthy approach?"

"There's no where to be stealthy. Everything here until the buildings is flat and open. If we just run past the demons we can then lose them in the residential area and make our way to the demon city."

"Do we have to go to the demon city?" Ajax whined.

"Yes. Because once there we need to get to the palace. So let's go." Wednesday began walking toward the desks, in between two soul lines that began to complain with the others following. As they got closer to the desks, the demons noticed them.

One blue skinned wingless one squinted his gold cat-like eyes at them. "Hey, wait a minute, you guys aren't dead. What are you—hey, stop!"

He shouted after them as they broke into a sprint and ran past the desks to the residential area. They could hear him scramble for the desk phone to make a call as they kept running. They ran over a bridge into the residential area, just continually booking it straight.

Ajax glanced over his shoulder. "Uhh, they're not chasing!"

"Because it's not their job!" Wednesday explained. In the distance there was the sound of a horn like they used to use in medieval times. An alarm. Flying over the city walls thirty miles away were dozens of demons all kitted with armor and weapons. "It's theirs!"
