A loud, bloody scream was heard out in the village sending chills down Branch's spine, he recognized that scream anywhere, it was hard to not recognize. He immediately race out of his bunker and sprinted straight to the village.
Branch: Poppy?!
His heart shattered when his suspicions were confirmed. There, curled up into a little ball and shaking violently, was Poppy. Her face drenched with tears and her screams acting like an echo. Branch dropped his weapons and kneeled down right in front of her. She didn't look hurt, but she looked absolutely horrified.
Branch: Poppy, what happened?!
Poppy pointed at a few Trolls in the distance who were wearing Ghostface masks and laughing with each other. Branch recognized those masks, he remembered watching the movie with his brothers when they were younger and he remembered how traumatized he was when he first saw that. He looked down at Poppy, her case seemed far more frightening then his own.
Poppy: They...they...they...
But Poppy could barely get any words out, all she could get out were tears and short, shaky breaths. Branch began to cradle her as she hyperventilated through her tears. She was understandably horrified.
Branch: Shhhhhhh I understand...
Branch began to wipe away Poppy's tears but they kept coming, it was very clear that she was scared out of her mind and she had a right to be. That was clearly uncalled for.
Poppy: They...scared...scared...
Poppy buried her face in Branch's chest and began to sob again. Branch couldn't stand to see her this way, this wasn't his Poppy. He carried her back to his bunker and sat on his armchair with her on his lap, he held her head against his chest letting her listen to his heartbeat, her ear against his chest.
Thump...thump...thump...thump...
Somehow, just the sound of his heart made Poppy feel more at ease, like nothing could hurt her, like Branch was the only person that mattered to her in the world.
Branch: Talk to me...
Poppy turned to Branch as he wiped away her remaining tears with a handkerchief, she was still quivering, but her tears had subsided and her breathing was evening out. She seemed to be settling down.
Poppy: ...Why do the other Trolls do scary things on Halloween?
Branch: I thought you liked those, Poppy. Heck, you've scared me more times than I can count.
Poppy giggled and shook her head.
Poppy: Not like that, I only did that just to mess with you, nothing more...but they were trying to terrorize me and the other Trolls in the village...and they seemed to be enjoying it.
Branch put his arms around Poppy trying to give her some comfort.
Branch: I understand where you're coming from, Poppy. A lot of people take Halloween to the next level and use it as an opportunity to get away with haunting things. Personally, I wish they would just grow up, not everyone likes to be scared half to death.
Poppy: Tell me about it...
Poppy buried her face in Branch's chest trying to block out the sheer terror she had felt...but something like that was something she wasn't going to forget, and neither would Branch.
Branch: I know you, Poppy, you're not afraid of anything.
Poppy: Except that...
Branch: No, that's not it. Anyone would have the same reaction, what they did was uncalled for and mean, not one bit funny.
Poppy nodded fiddling her fingers, she was still quivering just thinking about. Branch got up from his armchair and sat her down on the couch.
Branch: I'll be right back.
Poppy watched Branch leave and hugged her knees looking down at the floor, she just wished she could've had a better Halloween experience than what she had endured. She knew all about being scary on Halloween, but never like that. In her case, she just did it to give the other Trolls a tiny scare, like a jump scare, such as hearing the sound of thunder or hearing loud volume. She even did it with Viva a few times. But wearing a mask from a horror movie and screaming in your face? That was a whole new level of creepiness. Not that these Trolls were bad people, they just needed to grow up. Poppy looked up as Branch came back holding a mug of hot chocolate.
Branch: Here, this should help.
Poppy took little sips and started to calm down as the warm beverage soothed her nerves. Branch sat down next to her and kissed her forehead.
Branch: I'm here for you, okay?
Poppy nodded still sipping her hot chocolate, Branch put his arm around her rubbing her back.
Branch: Just a suggestion, but maybe you should talk to the rest of the village about scaring everyone. I think they took "scare anyone how you please" to the next level.
Poppy thought about the last Halloween event when she said that the Trolls could go crazy, it didn't seem harmful at first, but she never thought they would go so far as to traumatize the other Trolls with scary masks.
Branch: Let me give you some advice, okay? Specify.
Poppy turned to Branch as he spoke.
Branch: When decreeing something, you wanna be specific. Maybe next time, tell the Trolls that they're allowed to be scary, but only if who they're scaring is enjoying it too. Believe me, I've been jump scared by you many times.
Poppy giggled and blushed from embarrassment.
Poppy: Come on, it wasn't that bad.
Branch: Right...right, sneaking into my bunker while I was underdressed wasn't that bad at all.
Poppy started laughing feeling more like herself.
Poppy: Touché, Branch, touché...
Branch: C'mere, you!
Poppy laughed as Branch pulled her into a hug wrapping his arms around her and kissing her head. Then he looked into her eyes and kissed her on the lips, his arms around her waist. If there was anything Poppy knew, this was probably the scariest thing about Branch, and she loved it.
