Be Careful

Branch: Poppy, I saw this scrapbook and it made me-

But Branch heard the sounds of sniffling as soon as he entered Poppy's pod, he saw her sitting on her bed hugging herself, her tears were flowing like two waterfalls and she had boxes of tissues around her. His heart stopped when he saw his beloved fiancée in tears, he immediately knelt down in front of her and took her hands.

Branch: Poppy, what's wrong? Why are you crying?

Poppy: O-Oh Branch...I...I love you so much...!

To Branch's surprise, Poppy threw her arms around him and sobbed into his shoulder. Branch didn't know what was bothering her...but it couldn't be good. He knew she had a big heart and she was way more affected than he was. He couldn't stand to see her so upset and he picked her up holding her head against his shoulder.

Branch: What's the matter, love?

Poppy: I...I...I...I...

Branch: Take your time...deep breaths...

Poppy: I...I watched a movie with Viva earlier...

That was it? A movie?

Branch: Which one?

Poppy: She...she wanted to watch a horror movie with me...and I couldn't say no...she wanted to spend some quality time with me and make up for lost time.

That was understandable...Poppy and Viva were inseparable since their reunion. But a horror movie? Maybe that was a little too much.

Poppy: I didn't think it would be this scary, Branch...Viva said that she's been through worse and that...horror movies were nothing for her. But...but...

Branch: But it  was too scary for you?

Poppy: Exactly! But...I couldn't tell her...she was so happy and I couldn't bring myself to burst her bubble...I held it all in and came home to cry it out...

That sounded awful...but Poppy bottling up her emotions...that was even worse. Branch knew one thing for sure, Poppy was only hurting herself more with this method...and she wasn't telling anyone. Poppy began to sob more after she told Branch what had happened, he began to gently pat her back trying to bring her some comfort.

Branch: Hey, hey, it's just a movie, Poppy, it's not real.

Poppy: But...it was so scary, Branch...I kept panicking, I was so nervous...I even looked away numerous times...!

Branch: Poppy...

Poppy looked up at Branch, her eyes still red with tears.

Branch: Can I tell you something?

Poppy: W-What?

Branch: Be careful with what you let into your heart.

Poppy: Huh...what do you mean?

Branch gently placed a hand over Poppy's chest, feeling the steady rhythm of her heart.

Branch: You have a big heart, Poppy, but it's not emotionally strong, I know you're easily affected by the sad things in the world...but a horror movie...that's like a gash for you. I'm not saying that you should avoid it in the future...but I do want you to be realistic about the world we live in.

Poppy: ...How do you do it?

Branch: Do what?

Poppy: How is it that all those bad things that happen...you're not affected?

Personally, Branch didn't like to talk about why that was. He knew very well what had happened, and he knew that Poppy knew as well.

Branch: Because...because I've been through a lot growing up, Poppy...you know that I don't really like to talk about it, but...you also know that it made me stronger.

Poppy wiped her tears with the back of her hand and rested her head on Branch's chest. Branch couldn't stand to see her so broken and took matters into his own hands.

Branch: Poppy, c'mon, you're only hurting yourself the longer you're in here.

Branch took Poppy in his arms and carried her bridal style.

Poppy: W-Where are we going?

Branch: Somewhere you should've gone earlier.

Poppy whimpered softly and slowly opened the door to Viva's pod, she saw her older sister on the couch texting on her phone.

Poppy: Viva...?

Viva smiled when she saw Poppy at the doorway, she put her phone down and gave her a hug.

Viva: Hey, sis, come to watch another movie with me?

What Poppy did next, she found extremely difficult to do.

Poppy: No...

Viva: No? I thought you liked the movie we saw.

Poppy turned to Branch and he nodded, gesturing for her to keep going and tell her sister the truth.

Poppy: I...I hated it, Viva...it made me so freaked out...and I hid my emotions 'cause I didn't want to hurt your feelings. But horror movies for me...it's like a wound you can't heal. I couldn't stop crying after that...

Viva: Wait...what?

Poppy couldn't speak after that, she broke down again and buried her face into Viva's shoulder. Viva was really confused, but seeing her sister's turmoil...it tore her apart inside.

Viva: Poppy, why didn't you tell me? I would've watched a different movie with you if you had said something.

Poppy: R-Really?

Viva: You're my little sister, Poppy, I want you to be happy too. Next time we have a movie night, just tell me what you like so I know what to stay away from.

Poppy: Y-You sure?

Viva: Hermanita, if you're happy, then I'm happy.

Poppy sniffled a few times and Viva lifted her chin wiping away her tears.

Viva: When you cry, I cry, I just want you to be honest with me, okay? I promise, no more horror movies.

Poppy nodded and hugged her sister tightly, she knew for sure that Branch was right. She should've said no to the movie and suggested another one...her pure heart, she swore to herself that she would never expose it to anything horrific again.

Remember, be careful with what you let into your heart, keep it pure and be humane. Be like Poppy and Branch, have a positive attitude every day, and if there's something truly disturbing in your heart, talk to your loved ones. 🩷💙
