Grace

I walked into the house to see Maggie and Glenn sitting in the living room.

"Everyone's back now. I was over at Ron's house with the other teens here, they seem pretty nice. I guess." I said as I started to rush to the upstairs, not wanting to face the imminent confrontation with Carl.

"Grace?" Carl said as he dropped a bag near the front door.

"I'm going upstairs." I said quietly as I kept walking.

"Grace." Carl said, not asked, as he followed me up the stairs.

"What was that back there?" He said with a cold gaze.

"What are you talking about?" I said, trying to act oblivious.

I knew if he had seen that, he was gonna blow it way out of proportion. The truth is that I wasn't expecting a hug from Ron. And the second I felt things getting tense when I was alone with him, I left. But I couldn't tell Carl that. I couldn't. He'd be so angry.

"With Ron. Why were you guys hugging?" He said as he took a step closer to me.

"I hung out with him and some of the other kids today. He insisted on walking me home, even though I told him I didn't need that. He gave me a hug goodbye, but Carl, I was just trying to be polite." I answered defensively.

"Polite? I've only been gone for half a day, and you're already-" Carl began to say.

"Already what? You think I'm replacing you- or- or letting you go? After everything we've been through? Even everything before the world fell apart. You know what? I'm done having this same fight with you when I didn't do anything wrong. I am my own person and I can do what I want. Goodnight." I cut him off and stormed off angrily into a bedroom.

"That was quite the argument. What did you do?" Beth asked as she was laying on the bed.

"What did I do? Nothing. I did nothing. That Ron kid gave me a freaking hug and Carl saw it. Now he's all mad like usual. What's new." I rolled my eyes as I plopped down on the bed next to her.

"I know you were alone in that boy's house. I saw the other two kids leaving way before y'all came out." Beth said as she turned to me.

"Well yeah, they had to go. But they all already know each other. I'm just trying to get to know them. I'll take all the time I need." I replied, getting annoyed at the constant blame.

"Well you did kinda disappear and we didn't know where you went. But that's another story. Anyways, Maggie wants me to talk to you about things." Beth said awkwardly.

"Great. Like this day could get any worse." I grunted as I slammed my head into my pillow.

"Well Grace, remember when you got your period back at the farm? I said one day I'd tell you more about it, but I haven't gotten the chance. Now's my chance." Beth said as she sat up and leaned against the bed.

"When that happened, you became a woman." She began.

I cringed at that statement, but she continued on.

"And when that happens, you can get pregnant. And the younger you are, the more likely it will happen. And pregnancy happens when a man and a woman-" Beth stopped herself.

"Oh my god. I know what sex is, Beth. I read about it in a book I found back at the prison. But go on, I know Maggie's probably listening through the door to see if you're telling me what she wants you to." I sighed and rolled my eyes, not wanting to talk about or hear about any of this.
