Y/N stood at the edge of the Black Lake, the wind pulling at her robes. The war had left her with many scars, inside and out. She had lost friends, and her heart still ached from the biggest loss—Regulus Black. His death had been sudden, a painful blow during an already dark time. She had never fully recovered.
Regulus had been her anchor, her confidant, and the love of her life. They had talked about a future together, even as the darkness grew around them. And then, one day, he was gone, leaving a void that nothing could fill.
Years passed, and though Y/N tried to move on, she never truly succeeded. She became a healer, burying herself in her work to escape the pain. But every so often, something would remind her of Regulus—a stray black cat, a favorite song, the scent of fresh parchment—and the pain would return.
One evening, as she walked home from St. Mungo's, she felt a strange sensation, like she was being watched. She quickened her pace, looking over her shoulder, but saw nothing. Shaking her head, she blamed it on exhaustion and continued home.
When she reached her flat, she found an envelope on her doorstep. It had no name, only a wax seal with the Black family crest. Her heart pounded as she picked it up. She tore it open and read the note inside.
"Meet me at the Black Lake. Midnight."
The handwriting was unmistakable. Regulus. It couldn't be. Her hands shook as she clutched the note to her chest. Was it a cruel joke? An elaborate trap? But something deep inside her, a hope she had buried, urged her to go.
At midnight, she stood at the lake again, the moon casting a silvery glow over the water. She waited, her breath visible in the cold night air. Minutes felt like hours, and just as she began to doubt herself, a figure emerged from the shadows.
"Y/N."
The voice was familiar, achingly so. She turned, and there he was—Regulus Black, alive and real. She stepped back, her mind struggling to believe what her eyes saw.
"Regulus? How... how is this possible?"
He stepped closer, his eyes full of sorrow and longing. "I had to disappear, Y/N. To protect you, to keep you safe. The things I did, the people I crossed... staying was too dangerous. For both of us."
Tears welled in her eyes as she shook her head. "You left me. You just... left."
"I know," he whispered, reaching out to touch her cheek. "And I have regretted it every single day. But I couldn't bear the thought of you being hurt because of me."
She pulled away, the hurt and anger rising to the surface. "And what about my pain, Regulus? The years I spent mourning you, the nights I cried myself to sleep? You think disappearing made it easier?"
He looked heartbroken, his hand dropping to his side. "I'm so sorry, Y/N. I thought I was doing the right thing. But seeing you now, I realize how much I hurt you. I don't expect you to forgive me. I just needed you to know the truth."
For a long moment, they stood in silence, the weight of their past heavy between them. Finally, Y/N took a shaky breath.
"Why now? Why come back after all this time?"
"Because I couldn't stay away any longer," he admitted. "I've watched you from afar, seen the amazing woman you've become. And I couldn't bear the thought of losing you forever."
She searched his face, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. The love she had never stopped feeling fought with the anger and betrayal. Slowly, she nodded.
"You hurt me, Regulus. But I never stopped loving you."
He took her hand, his grip gentle yet firm. "I love you too, Y/N. More than anything. And if you'll have me, I want to spend the rest of my life making it up to you."
Tears flowed freely now, and she stepped into his embrace, the familiar warmth wrapping around her. "We have a lot to work through," she murmured against his chest.
"I know," he replied, holding her close. "But I'm here. And I'm not going anywhere this time."
Together, they stood by the Black Lake, the future uncertain but filled with hope. For the first time in years, Y/N felt a sense of peace, knowing that the love they shared was strong enough to heal even the deepest wounds.
