It was late at night, and Solar was tossing and turning in his bed. His face was covered in sweat, his expression twisted with fear. His mind was consumed by the nightmare — a replay of his traumatic encounter with Retakka.
In his dream, he felt himself being sucked into the cold, empty void of space, his body helplessly spiraling as Retakka's cruel laughter echoed around him. Solar's powers were useless against the vastness of space, and his breath quickened as he felt the icy coldness of space seeping into his bones. The stars were distant, unreachable, and his body grew weaker by the second.
He gasped, his chest tightening as he felt his consciousness slipping. Was this how it would end?
Solar shot awake, panting heavily, his body drenched in cold sweat. His heart raced, pounding against his ribcage as he sat up and wiped his forehead. The room was dark, only the faintest light from the moon trickling through the blinds. His throat felt dry, his hands trembling slightly.
His eyes darted around the room, the lingering terror still gripping him. Not again... he thought, burying his face in his hands. His breaths were shallow, and he quickly realized that sleep would offer no comfort tonight. But this was nothing new for Solar. Nighttime had become his enemy, and the nightmares... well, they had become an uninvited but frequent visitor.
Solar stood up, deciding once again that sleep wasn't for him. He quietly crept to his lab, the place where he felt safe, where he could distract himself from the haunting memories. This was why Solar barely slept — the darkness terrified him. He couldn't bear the thought of closing his eyes and being sucked into that nightmare again.
In truth, Solar was suffering from nyctophobia, the fear of the dark. His brothers had no idea. All they saw was the workaholic who stayed up all night doing experiments, constantly tinkering with gadgets and potions.
The Morning After
The next morning, Halilintar, the eldest of the siblings, woke up and immediately noticed that Solar had dark circles under his eyes again. It wasn't the first time, and it wouldn't be the last, but Hali had had enough.
"What were you doing last night? In that lab of yours?" Halilintar asked, arms crossed as he stood over Solar, who was fiddling with something on his workbench.
Solar glanced up, annoyed by the interruption. "None of your business," he snapped, his voice flat.
Halilintar's eyes narrowed. "It is my business when you're staying up all night and making everyone worry. You've been doing this for weeks, Solar! When's the last time you slept for more than two hours?"
Solar rolled his eyes, clearly uninterested in the lecture. "I'm fine. Stop nagging, Hali."
That was the last straw. Halilintar's patience snapped. "Fine? You look like you're going to collapse any second! You've got no right to keep doing this to yourself and acting like it's nothing. You're not invincible, Solar!"
Gempa entered the room just in time to hear the argument escalating. He placed a hand on Halilintar's shoulder, trying to calm him down. "Hali, let's not shout first thing in the morning," Gempa said gently, but even he couldn't hide the concern in his voice. He turned to Solar. "Solar, we're just worried about you. You've been pushing yourself too hard."
Solar clenched his fists, feeling the frustration build. He didn't need this right now. "Worried? Really? You've got better things to worry about than me," Solar muttered, standing up from his chair. "Just leave me alone."
Halilintar's face darkened with anger, but there was also something else — guilt. As much as he was frustrated, something inside him tugged at his heart. He couldn't understand why Solar was acting this way. Why was he always staying awake? What was going on with him?
