Late into the night, the house was quiet, with the only sound being the ticking of a distant clock. But in one room, all was far from peaceful.
Ice lay on his bed, face scrunched up in distress as he tossed and turned. His breathing was heavy, almost like he was struggling with something in his sleep. His hand clenched tightly around his pillow, and his whole body seemed tense.
"No... don't..." he muttered, barely audible, but enough that the fear in his voice was clear. His dreams were twisting into a nightmare, something dark and cold—like being trapped in a place he couldn't escape from.
Blaze, who was sleeping just down the hall, blinked awake. He hadn't heard Ice's voice directly, but something about the house felt... off. Quietly, he slipped out of his bed, feeling drawn to check on his brother.
When Blaze entered the room, he saw Ice curled up on the bed, fists clenched so hard his knuckles were pale. Ice's face was scrunched up, and a faint tear trickled down his cheek.
"No... please... don't leave me," Ice mumbled, his voice shaky.
Blaze felt a pang in his chest. Seeing his normally calm and composed brother like this made him realize how deep Ice's hidden fears must run. He gently sat on the edge of Ice's bed, leaning close.
"Ice," Blaze whispered, his voice soft, like he was talking to a small, frightened animal. "Hey, wake up, buddy."
But Ice didn't wake. He just shook harder, his breathing even more uneven now. Blaze felt a lump form in his throat. He knew what nightmares could be like, but seeing Ice, his usually collected brother, like this... it was different.
"Hey, Ice. It's just me, Blaze," he said, his tone tender as he reached over, gently shaking Ice's shoulder. "Come on, wake up. I'm right here."
Finally, with a jolt, Ice's eyes snapped open. He gasped, sitting up quickly, his gaze wild as if he were still lost in his nightmare. His eyes met Blaze's, and for a second, he looked so scared that it hurt.
"Blaze?" Ice's voice was small, barely a whisper. He looked away, brushing a hand across his eyes quickly, but not before Blaze saw the glint of fresh tears.
"Yeah, I'm here," Blaze said softly, putting a hand on Ice's shoulder. "You okay? Looked like a rough dream."
Ice just shook his head, trying to pull himself together, but Blaze could see through it. He could see how hard Ice was struggling to hide his fear, to be the usual calm, collected brother he always was. But tonight, it seemed, even he couldn't keep his cool.
Blaze leaned closer, wrapping an arm around Ice, pulling him into a hug. Ice hesitated, stiff at first, but then he melted into the hug, burying his face in Blaze's shoulder.
"It... it was so real," Ice mumbled, his voice breaking. "I felt... alone... I thought... everyone left me..."
Blaze's heart ached as he held his brother tighter. "Hey, we're all here, okay? I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere. You're not alone, Ice. Not ever."
Ice's shoulders shook as he clung to Blaze, finally letting out the tears he'd been holding back. Blaze rubbed his back gently, letting him cry without a word, his own throat tight with emotion. It wasn't often that he got to be the comforting one, but tonight, he was ready to do whatever Ice needed.
Outside the door, Gempa and Solar stood quietly, watching from a distance. They hadn't heard much, but seeing Blaze holding Ice like that, so protective and gentle, made their hearts ache. They didn't want to intrude, so they simply exchanged a look, both filled with pride and empathy for their brothers
"Think he'll be okay?" Solar whispered to Gempa, his voice soft.
Gempa nodded. "Blaze has him. They both just need this moment, I think."
After a while, Ice's breathing began to steady, his sobs slowing down as he clung to Blaze like a lifeline. Blaze kept holding him, not moving a muscle, just staying close.
"I don't... get scared like that," Ice mumbled finally, his voice thick with lingering tears. "But it was like... everyone was gone."
Blaze shook his head, his voice gentle but firm. "You don't have to hide it, Ice. We all get scared. Even me. But you know what? No matter what, we're always going to be here. All of us. There's no getting rid of me or anyone else."
Ice gave a small, shaky smile, and Blaze chuckled, pulling away just enough to look him in the eyes. "And if anyone ever does try to leave you, they'll have to deal with me first."
Ice managed a soft laugh, his tears finally stopping. "Thanks, Blaze... I... I didn't know how much I needed that."
"Anytime, bro," Blaze said with a grin, ruffling Ice's hair. "Now, how about we get some sleep? I'll stay right here if you want."
Ice hesitated, glancing over at the empty space next to him on the bed. "You... you wouldn't mind?"
"Not at all," Blaze replied, sliding under the covers next to Ice. "Besides, it's been a while since I got to steal your bed."
With a small smile, Ice settled down, feeling the warmth of Blaze beside him, a comforting presence that chased away the lingering shadows of his nightmare. Blaze stayed close, his eyes staying open for a while, just making sure his brother was okay.
