The lounge was unusually quiet that evening. The soft crackle of the fireplace filled the air, complemented by the comforting aroma of hot chocolate. Halilintar sat on the couch, one hand gripping a steaming mug while the other idly drummed against his knee. The day's events had been tiring, and this rare moment of peace was a relief.
He took a sip, savoring the warmth spreading through his chest, when a small figure appeared at the edge of his vision. Solar, his two-year-younger brother, shuffled over, clutching his own mug of hot chocolate in his tiny hands.
Halilintar raised an eyebrow as Solar hesitated before plopping himself down next to him. "What're you doing here?" Hali grumbled, not unkindly but with his usual brusque tone.
Solar didn't respond right away, his small legs swinging as he stared into his mug. Hali sighed, turning his attention back to the fireplace. He wasn't used to Solar being this quiet.
"Big brother Hali?" Solar's voice broke the silence, small and almost timid.
Hali turned his head slightly, side-eyeing his brother. "What?"
"Do you... love me?" Solar asked, his voice so soft it was almost a whisper.
Hali froze mid-sip, the mug hovering near his lips. "What kind of question is that?" he asked, his tone sharper than he intended.
Solar's grip tightened on his mug. "Because... you're always grumpy with me," he said, his voice wavering slightly. "You never smile at me, or talk to me much unless you're mad."
Halilintar blinked, caught off guard. "I'm always like that," he muttered, trying to brush it off.
But Solar didn't say anything. His small frame trembled, and when Halilintar glanced at him, he noticed tears streaming down his little brother's face.
"Hey, hey, don't cry," Hali said awkwardly, setting his mug down and leaning closer. "What's with you now?"
Solar sniffled, wiping at his eyes with his sleeve. "You don't love me," he whimpered. "I-I try to be good, but you're always mean to me. You don't like me at all."
Halilintar sighed heavily, ruffling his hair in frustration. "Solar, listen to me," he said firmly. "Of course I love you. You're my little brother."
Solar's tears slowed, but he still looked doubtful. "Then why don't you ever show it?"
Hali hesitated. He wasn't good at expressing his feelings. Words like these didn't come easily to him, especially with someone as sharp-tongued as Solar.
Seeing his silence, Solar looked down at his lap, his tiny fingers gripping the edge of his mug. "It's okay," he said quietly. "If you don't love me, that's fine. I know I'm annoying, and I talk too much, and I'm just a nerd no one likes."
Halilintar's heart clenched. He reached out and tilted Solar's chin up, forcing him to meet his gaze. "Don't say that," he said gruffly. "You're not annoying, and I don't hate you. I love you, okay? And yeah, you're a nerd, but you're my nerd. You're smart—way smarter than I'll ever be. That's something I'll never hate about you."
Solar's eyes widened, his face lighting up with a smile. "Really? You mean that?"
"Yes, I mean it," Hali grumbled, leaning back against the couch. "Don't make me repeat it."
Giggling, Solar climbed onto Hali's lap, wrapping his arms around his neck. "I knew you loved me, big brother!"
Hali groaned, his hands awkwardly hovering before settling on Solar's back. "Why are you sitting on me now?"
"Can't I?" Solar teased, tilting his head innocently.
"Whatever," Hali muttered, rolling his eyes but not pushing him off.
After a few moments, Solar hopped down, declaring, "I wanna go home now."
Hali stood, stretching, but instead of heading to the door, he crouched down to Solar's height.
Before Solar could ask what he was doing, Hali pressed a quick, awkward kiss to his forehead.
"Let's go," Hali said gruffly, straightening up and grabbing Solar's hand.
Solar stood frozen in place, his cheeks burning. Slowly, he looked up at Hali, who was already heading toward the door. His older brother's face was slightly pink, and he was clearly trying to act like nothing had happened.
A wide grin spread across Solar's face. He squeezed Hali's hand as they walked, a newfound warmth filling his chest. He didn't need to hear the words again. That small, unexpected gesture was enough to tell him everything he needed to know.
Halilintar loved him, and Solar couldn't be happier.
