It was late, the whole house was quiet, but in the living room, Hali sat on the couch, looking way too tense for this hour. His shoulders were slumped, fists clenched, and his gaze fixed somewhere distant. He looked like he was trying to get something out of his head, to shake some shadow clinging to him.
Just as he was about to sigh and sink deeper into the couch, Solar walked into the room, yawning and rubbing his eyes. "Hali?" Solar squinted, surprised to see his big brother just sitting there.
Hali jolted, glancing up quickly. "What're you doing up, kid?" His voice was gruff as usual, but Solar could see something different—something tired and...off.
"I was thirsty," Solar shrugged, studying him closely, "What's up with you?"
"Nothing you'd get, alright?" Hali muttered, attempting to pull his usual attitude. But Solar just plopped himself down next to him, unphased by Hali's gruffness.
"Try me," Solar challenged, folding his arms. "Why're you sitting here like you've seen a ghost?"
Hali shook his head, still resisting. "Don't worry about it. Just some...things that don't matter."
But Solar didn't budge. "You had a nightmare, didn't you?"
Hali paused, his guard slipping for a second, then sighed, mumbling, "It's just stupid stuff... I saw...well..." His voice lowered. "Things that happened. And maybe things that could happen, I dunno..."
Solar's expression softened, nodding as if he understood every unspoken word. "Yeah? Bad things?"
Hali gave a small nod, looking away.
Solar nudged him gently. "It's okay to be bothered by it. Just because you're strong doesn't mean you gotta hold it all in."
Hali clenched his jaw, looking like he wanted to brush it off but couldn't. "I just—" His voice broke slightly, "I don't wanna mess up and... lose you all, alright?"
For a moment, they sat in silence. But then, Solar reached over and put a hand on Hali's shoulder. "Hali, we're all here. And none of us are leaving you, alright? Not me, not Gem, not anyone."
Hali let out a shaky breath, finally breaking. His usual tough facade slipped away, and he slumped forward, burying his face in his hands. Solar scooted closer, putting an arm around him as Hali's breaths came faster, and his shoulders shook.
Hali tried to hold back, but the tears he'd been fighting escaped. He didn't say much more, but Solar didn't need him to. He pulled his big brother into a hug, holding tight and murmuring quietly, "We're all here. I'm here." He squeezed Hali's shoulder, letting him know he was safe.
Finally, Hali's breathing slowed. His grip on Solar relaxed as the exhaustion started to take over. Solar stayed beside him, keeping his arm around Hali as they both drifted off to sleep together on the couch, the comfort of being there for each other enough to keep the nightmares at bay for the night.
