It was late afternoon, the sky dimming as the evening crept in. Little Solar's cries echoed through the house, and it didn't take long for Hali, the eldest, to stomp into the room, crossing his arms.
"What's with all the noise?" Hali grumbled, raising an eyebrow.
Solar, eyes wide and red from crying, barely looked up. His lip quivered, and he tried to mumble something, but his voice came out shaky and small.
"Hey," Hali sighed, kneeling down beside his little brother, trying not to look too annoyed. "What happened?"
Solar sniffed, wiping his face with his sleeve, looking away. "They were... saying mean things... said I was too small, not... not strong like you." His voice shook, clearly embarrassed to admit it.
Hali felt his chest clench at those words, but he kept his expression tough. "Forget them. They don't know anything. Who cares what they think?"
"But..." Solar hiccuped, his fists clenched. "But they're right. You're so strong, Hali, and I... I can't even defend myself."
Hali's eyes softened as he looked at his little brother, who always tried so hard to keep up. It wasn't like him to say much, but he reached out and awkwardly ruffled Solar's hair. "Listen, they're wrong. You don't have to be strong like me. You've got your own kind of power. You're the smart one, yeah? Who else can think up the stuff you do?"
Solar looked up, startled, then blinked. "You... you really think so?"
Hali sighed, looking away as if the ceiling had suddenly become very interesting. "Yeah, don't make me say it twice. You're always in your room reading and thinking up stuff I don't get. That's important, Solar."
Solar smiled faintly, and without thinking, leaned over, wrapping his arms around Hali in a hug. Hali's eyes widened, but he didn't push Solar away. Instead, he let out a heavy sigh, patting Solar's back.
"Alright, alright, enough with the hugging," he muttered, even though he hugged Solar back. "You'll get better, okay? And you've got me. If anyone messes with you, they'll have to deal with me first."
Solar pulled back, his eyes bright, nodding. "Thanks, Hali. I won't... I won't let them get to me anymore."
Hali gave a small, rare smile, his gruff tone softening. "Good. Now go wash up. Dinner's soon, and I don't want to hear you crying over something that doesn't matter. Got it?"
Solar laughed a little, wiping his face. "Got it. Thanks, Hali."
As they headed toward the kitchen, Hali kept a close eye on his little brother. And from that day on, Solar knew he'd always have a shield, even if that shield pretended he didn't care.
