It was a quiet weekend afternoon, and Taufan found himself resting under the shade of a big tree in the backyard, enjoying the slight breeze and the soft scent of earth and plants all around him. His little brother, Duri, was busy tending to his small garden nearby. Taufan closed his eyes, feeling his whole body relax as the leaves rustled above him, letting his mind drift into a peaceful lull.
That's when he heard Duri's soft voice call, "Taufan? Can you come help me with something?"
He opened one eye, a playful grin creeping across his face. "Do I have to?" he teased, though he was already sitting up and brushing dirt off his jeans.
"Yes, please!" Duri's voice was filled with excitement, and Taufan could never say no to that eager tone. He got up and joined Duri, who was squatting by a row of small, green seedlings that were just beginning to sprout.
Duri looked up with a serious expression, his wide, innocent eyes full of focus. "I think they need a bit more space. Do you think you can help me spread them out?"
"Of course, plant expert." Taufan playfully ruffled Duri's hair, earning a little giggle as he knelt down beside him. "So, tell me what to do, Captain."
They worked together for a while, carefully digging small holes and gently moving the sprouts into their new homes. Duri was meticulous, explaining each step and giving Taufan little tips he'd picked up from his books about taking care of plants.
"I love how you know so much about these things," Taufan said, genuinely impressed as he watched Duri's careful hands patting down the soil around each sprout.
Duri looked up, a shy smile on his face. "Well... they're my friends, you know? Plants need to feel safe and happy just like we do."
Taufan chuckled and nodded. "I get it, little bro. But don't you think you're just a little too soft on these guys? They can handle a bit of roughness too, you know."
"Maybe..." Duri bit his lip thoughtfully, looking down at the plants. "But I don't want to risk hurting them." His face brightened suddenly as he looked up at Taufan, "Just like I'd never want to hurt any of you."
Touched, Taufan paused and gave Duri's shoulder a little squeeze. "Don't worry, Duri. I think you're doing a perfect job just being yourself."
After another hour, both of them were leaning against the tree, exhausted but happy. The garden was looking beautiful, the sprouts neatly spread out and set up to grow strong. Duri's eyes were shining as he surveyed their work, and he sighed contentedly, leaning his head against Taufan's shoulder.
"Thanks for helping me, Taufan. I don't know if I could've done it all by myself," he murmured sleepily.
"You totally could've," Taufan replied, wrapping an arm around him. "But I'm glad you wanted me here."
As they sat in the peaceful quiet, the gentle sounds of birds and the occasional rustling of leaves filled the air. Taufan noticed Duri's breathing was slowing down, his little brother's eyes already starting to droop. The day's work and the calming garden had clearly worn him out.
Just when Taufan thought he'd drifted off, Duri lifted his head slightly. "Hey, Taufan... You'll always be here, right? Like, even if I grow up and do things on my own?"
The question surprised him, but he ruffled Duri's hair with a soft chuckle. "Always, Duri. You're stuck with me for life."
Duri smiled, clearly relieved by the answer. He nuzzled closer, and his voice became softer as he whispered, "Good... I don't think I'd want to do things without you."
As the sunlight began to dim, Taufan noticed Duri was finally falling asleep, leaning fully against him. Taufan shifted slightly to make him more comfortable, careful not to disturb his rest. He noticed that Duri's hand was still clutching a small sprout they'd found earlier—a new addition he wanted to plant tomorrow, perhaps.
They stayed like that for a while, simply enjoying the calm and warmth of each other's presence. Taufan felt a strong, brotherly protectiveness well up in his heart, and he knew he'd do anything to keep Duri feeling this safe and happy forever.
Just then, a voice called out from the house. It was Hali, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. "Hey, you two! Naptime's over. You coming inside, or do I need to drag you both?"
Taufan gave him a playful wave. "We're good out here, big bro. Besides, Duri's already asleep, and I'm not risking waking him up."
Hali rolled his eyes but softened as he looked at the two of them. "Alright, but don't stay out too late. Dinner's in an hour."
After Hali disappeared back inside, Taufan settled back again, whispering softly, "You hear that, Duri? We have an hour. So, you better get your sleep while you can."
Duri shifted slightly, his hand instinctively reaching for Taufan's. His fingers tightened around Taufan's hand, as if silently telling him he was where he belonged. Taufan gave Duri's hand a gentle squeeze back and smiled, feeling an overwhelming sense of love and pride for his little brother.
They sat together, surrounded by Duri's beloved plants and the fading light of the day, until the stars began to peek out and it was finally time to head inside.
