Dan groaned, head falling forward onto the table. He had been up worrying about Brook's design all night, and now he had to actually put the pieces into place?
He stretched, nodded to Emillia on his way out, and clocked in his lunch hour. He was thirty minutes past when he should have taken it, anyway. So he might cut it short. That way no one else's schedules were off. And he was used to his being off, anyways.
Deciding against going out to the rest of the city for lunch, Dan settled on using less money to get a heavily discounted meal from "Fiona's European Express!"(the fox herself shook her head at the name but didn't complain) as that was the most in-budget for him. The line was usually short, since most of the meals were healthy. The one thing Fiona liked about the small food stand named after her.
("I swear, that thing is an atrocity! Those colors? That name? Fizzy-faz, no!" Fiona shook her head, looking offended that he had even asked.
"Thank the lord above I'm not alone." he laughed. Fiona nodded seriously.
"The only good thing is that most of the meals are really healthy! For mall food, anyways. Except those pierogi... the grease in those things! We shame the Polish people.")
"I'll have the goulash, please." He asked kindly. Jenny, the staff on-register today, smiled at him. He was a common customer.
"8.32. But you know that." She told him. He grinned, giving her the money and putting a few dollars in the tip jar. He stepped aside to the waiting area for the food. Really just a small stretch of counter where they tossed the food at you and prayed they didn't do anything wrong so you would leave them with no complaints.
It wasn't too long before a to-go bowl was sat in-front of him, and Adrien, one of the kitchen staff that switched out every so often. The brunette nodded at him before hurrying back to the kitchen. Dan took the bowl and turned away, heading for the staff hallways.
He glanced at patrons and he passed, vaguely recognizing some of the faces. A few nods from the higher society guests who came often enough to recognize him on his lunch break.
Dan weaved through the rowdy crowds, breathing a sigh of relief as he got to the staff halls. No more people.
"Oh, hey Dan."
...One more person.
"Hey, Maddie." Dan nodded to his fellow ravenette. The girl perked up at his dish.
"Goulash?" She asked curiously. Dan nodded, smiling. "Nice! My mom used to make it for me when I was younger, before her seizure." The woman wilted a little. "She's not with us anymore, but it was her favorite dish to make, so I like to make it every so often, how she did." Maddie laughed. Dan nodded, a little sullen. Poor woman.
"She sounds wonderful. I can't cook at all, but maybe we can compare recipes sometime. My mom used to make it too... actually, she also passed because of a seizure. I had a little sister, but we got separated in the foster system. She was a few years younger than me, so I doubt she remembers me." He shrugged.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. But yeah, we should. Maybe I'll bring some to work sometime. It's really all I have of my mom, so I'd be happy to share it." Maddie smiled. Dan nodded.
"See you around, Maddie." The woman grinned at him.
"You too. Enjoy that goulash for me!" Dan laughed despite himself.
Maybe he should get out more often. Who knew how many of his coworkers were like Maddie. Maybe Jamilla and Mike were just as nice.
