We spent the entire day roaming the sprawling streets of Jhajjar. Firstly, we planned to visit his school to get the residential address. But we met with disappointment finding school was closed on the occasion of Saturday.
Our next stop was the college where Rajat completed his graduation. We located it and got the address successfully but his family shifted to another area. His former neighbours helped us by providing the new address. But we decided to visit the found address tomorrow considering it was already ten at night.
As planned, we started our journey after having our breakfast. Imran was handling the driving part. Mayank Sir occupied the passenger seat while the rest three of us settled on the back seat.
“Avantika, the social media is circulating with your reception news and various speculations.” Rohan brought my attention to him as he scrolled through the phone.
I immediately decoded the word speculation insinuating about my pregnancy. I came across numerous posts last night, linking our hospital visit to the rumours.
“Investigation seems fascinating only in books or in movies. In real life, it's another way of ruining yourself.” Arisa sighed in frustration diverting the topic, leaning against the seat.
I nodded in agreement.
“At least we're working with our own identities, unlike the secret agents. One mistake on your mission and boom, you lose the chance to live. And what's worse, your very own country refuses to accept your body after death. Even if we die on our duty, our family gets a chance to bid us farewell, our body wrapped in the national flag but their condition is more horrible. Even they aren't spared after death.” Rohan’s words painted a grim picture, bringing my husband and family to mind.
What if someday I went on an investigation and never returned home? To him?
Arisa’s palm cupped my hand as I raised my eye to glance at her. “I'll always be your shield to protect you from every harm.”
“I know. I would do anything to ensure you're safe.”I rested my head on her shoulder.
“Team, we’ve reached,” Imran announced, halting the car in front of a massive elephantine door. One by one, we stepped out. I surveyed the surroundings to get an idea about the locality.
10.30 am.
The watch informed the time. I blew a breath through my mouth as I leaned against the metallic frame of the jeep, releasing a slow breath. “Avantika, you fine?” Mayank Sir’s question made me stand straight as I noticed him approaching me.
