Yazmin quickly grabbed her heels and made her way down the stairs. Her heart quickened against her chest as she prayed and hoped that her mother wasn't downstairs. Tonight was the night of prom. But it wasn't her prom. It was her friend's prom and she had to attend. She was aware that her mother was going to question her as if she was in an interrogation room, although they spoke about her going out that night.
Sadly, her hopes fell through when her mother exited the kitchen with her tablet in one hand and her mug in the other. She had her reading glasses on and was dressed in her expensive pajamas. Her hair cascaded down her back.
"Where are you off to?"
"I told you I'm going out with my friend."
"The friend that was here eating all of the lemon cakes that the chefs made?" Sophia frowned. "I told you, you need to stop trying to make friends . Especially friends that seem like they don't have food at home." She scoffed. "Where's Penny?"
Yazmin rolled her eyes. "Penny's not the only friend that I have, Mom. How do you expect me to be able to network when I graduate if I can't make many friends?"
"You'll make plenty of friends when you go to Europe. Friends that you'll have more things in common with. Friends from the same caliber..." Sophia shrugged and walked off towards the stairs.
"I-I don't even know if I wanna go to Europe yet."
Sophia eyed her heavily.
"That's a big decision to make."
"Well, it's a decision that you need to make quickly."
Yazmin watched as her mother disappeared up the stairs and made her way out of the house. She smiled widely at the sight of Curtis outside of the front door. He stood with his arm held out and a small smile on his face.
"What are you doing here?"
"Although I don't agree with what you're doing...I promised your parents when you were born that I'd be there for you."
Yazmin smiled and hugged him tightly.
Curtis' eyes widened in astonishment. Slowly, his stiff stance softened as he wrapped his arms around her. She leaned her head against his chest, her body curling into his. She couldn't remember the last time she was hugged like this by her father. This was the first time in a long time where she felt safe. Although she felt secure in the arms of Sean, this felt different. She was in the arms of a fatherly figure and felt her age. Something she hadn't felt in a long time.
She felt like a kid instead of the lady that had to fend for herself without the love and affection of her parents.
"Thank you, Curtis."
He led her towards the car and got into the driver's seat once she was situated.

Curtis eased in front of the small house with the white gate surrounding it. Yazmin sent Alex a text stating that she was in front of her house and waited. A few minutes later, the front door quickly opened and Alex bursted out. Yazmin gasped in awe. Her best friend looked beautiful- she always looked great, but her beauty had been enhanced. Her hair was parted in the side and cascaded down the small of her back in dramatic body waves.
