The next day Dandin slept in. His small body wasn't used to staying awake until 11PM and it greedily forced him to sleep for a full 10 hours. When he woke up, he found out that his dad had already left on a mission. His mom fed him a healthy breakfast and he went outside to train.

The Land of Rivers was a beautiful country. Its weather was warm year-round, it had many forests which were bisected by rivers and streams of many sizes that slowly flowed towards the Land of Steam and then into the ocean. There were flowers everywhere and lots of birds. The summer and winter were the dry season, and the spring and fall were the wet season. In the wet season it rained almost every day, but it was rarely cloudy all the time. Instead, the sky would be blue and bright from morning until late afternoon and then it would rain for an hour or more. Then, when the night was old the clouds would break open and the stars would reveal themselves to the world.

The first harvest festival had ended, and it was the middle of summer. It was the perfect time for Dandin to train to his heart's content.

"Dad said he would be gone for a few weeks. Hopefully he will get back soon so he can help me train again. Let's work on the chakra barrier until then. If I master it before he returns I'll practice with my new sword."

Dandin focused his chakra and created the barrier. It shimmered to life around his body. He inspected the barrier and made sure it worked correctly, then he started to walk around his house.

He felt stiff and the barrier wavered a few times, but he was able to make it all the way around the house.

"That's better than I've been able to do before. I'll deactivate it and do it again."

Dandin spent the next two hours walking around the house with his barrier activated. It felt unnatural, like trying to write with your left hand instead of your right hand. Walking, which he was good at, seemed disjointed and hard.

But Dandin slowly got used to the chakra barrier.

When it was time for lunch he left the barrier up and ate with it activated. He missed his mouth a few times and spilled his water once, much to the annoyance of his mother, but in the end, he finished the meal.

Day after day passed until at last, after a week, he was able to use the barrier without actively thinking about it. Sometimes it still got in his way, but it didn't waver or flicker anymore.

"Dandin, do you want to play tag with us?" That afternoon Taki waited outside with Haru and Miko. The three had stopped at Dandin's house to invite him to play. They'd come by one other time, but Dandin told them he was too busy training and sent them away. But this time was different.

"That would be fun. We should go." Dandin replied to the little kids. At the same time he thought, "They might be my teammates in the future so it's better if I build relationships with them now. I also need to add variety to my barrier training and playing games with them is a good idea."

"I need to tell my mom I'm leaving. Wait here." Dandin ran inside and asked Matsuri if he could play. These days his mom was always tired. He found her resting on the couch and quickly asked her if he could go play.

"That sound great but be back in time for dinner. If you leave the park, tell Hina or I where you're going."

"Yes mom!"

Dandin ran back to his friends, and they all left for the park together. The little group chatted about toys and books until Miko asked Dandin a question.

"Dandin, are you worried about your dad?"

Dandin raised an eyebrow, "no," he said, "why would I be worried about him?"
