Dandin finished his daily training and got ready to go home when he saw Zanko coming towards him.
"Zanko-sama! I've just learned this sixth Hatamo Taijutsu form. Mujin taught it to me yesterday!" Dandin ran to Zanko excitedly. He always tried to endear himself to the clan leader as he hoped to become his official student. He acted like a cute kid in the hope that he would succeed.
"That's great Dandin. Go ahead and show me the form."
"Yes Zanko-sama!"
More time passed. But one day Zanko sat down with Dandin. He had a serious expression on his face.
"Dandin, you've really impressed me."
"Thank you Zanko-sama."
Zanko smiled, "I want to explain something to you. Our Hatamo clan is small. Have you ever wondered why that is?"
"It's small Zanko-sama?"
"By the standards of Kawagakure it's very small. But it wasn't always as small as it is now." Zanko sighed. "Once our clan had hundreds of members, but as war after war was fought our numbers couldn't keep up with our losses. When we joined Kawagakure we only had thirty clan members left. That was fifty years ago."
"Yet, as time went by our numbers have slowly grown under Kawagakure's protection. Now there are over 100 members in the clan. We have a few Jounin, tens of Chunin, and several Genin. It's just enough power that we're recognized as an official clan."
Zanko's gaze became more serious.
"Why do you think that our clan lost so many people in the past?"
"I don't know Zanko-sama. Is it because we fought too many hard enemies?"
"That's a good guess and close to the mark. It's because we were feared because our ninjas are all talented. We were targeted in every conflict because of that, and we were also given many employment missions because of that."
"Most of our ninjas become Chunin. That's impressive. But in the past we could produce a Sokonin in every generation. It's because we have an amazing ability to learn. When you go to the academy you'll see how amazing your ability is. Right now, you have no one to compare yourself to. But at the academy you'll spend time with many young ninjas from different clans and backgrounds. You'll see just how much easier it is for you to learn compared to them. That applies to everything from science to ninjutsu. Furthermore, we have a basic affinity with every elemental chakra. That means that we can learn any jutsu up to rank C if we're willing to practice."
"I tell you this now because I want you to be prepared. You can become proficient in many areas but it's easy to get distracted by that. But to be strong you need to do three things. First, you need a solid foundation. That's what your parents and I are currently giving you. Second, you need to focus on your strengths. Third, you need to eliminate your weaknesses."
