Parting Gift

"One... Two..." Dandin closed his eyes and started to count. Immediately Taki, Miko, Riku, Takeshi, Yumi, and Haru ran in all directions. Dandin could hear them all run away and was surprised by how fast they all moved.

"Taki did say they all wanted to be ninjas. They must have been trained by their parents a little. No matter, I'm sure I'll catch them all quickly."

Dandin loudly counted until he reached, "Twenty! Ready or not here I come!"

*Sniff* *Sniff*

Unknown to the children Dandin was someone who had the abilities of a born tracker.

Dandin was a part of the Hatamo Clan, and he was a natural tracker. He had a sharp sense of smell and while the kids were introducing themselves, he'd memorized each of their scents. If they had not been in a packed park, he would have been able to find them in a heartbeat. But since there was a large crowd there were a lot of strong smells in the air which made finding them a more difficult task than usual.

"Yumi is the easiest to track. She has the strongest scent. I'll find her first."

A quick sniff of the air told him that Yumi had gone North. He tapped his feet on the ground and then sprinted after the girl.

The crowd flowed around Dandin. He was fast, but the people were unpredictable. He had to zig zag around people multiple times to avoid collisions. But he followed Yumi's smell untroubled. With just a few twists and turns he spotted the girl climbing a tree. She'd only had twenty seconds to hide so she hadn't been able to make it far.

He ran up to her and grabbed her leg.

"Found you! You're the first one."

"Dandin, how did you find me so fast?"

Dandin replied with a smile, "it's a secret!" before he ran off in a different direction.

"If I circle the start, I'll be able to find everyone's scent. I'll find them one by one as I go around the circle." His feet moved quickly until he discovered the smell of another child.

"...hmmm... I think this is Taki." Dandin turned his head left and right, "It's definitely Taki. Let's go find him."

It only took Dandin five minutes to find Yumi, Taki, Miko, Haru, and Riku. Riku had proven to be the hardest one to find because he'd actually gotten inside a trashcan and that confused Dandin's smell.

Frustratingly Dandin still couldn't find Takeshi. The boy's scent was everywhere. He was clearly moving around. Yet Dandin hadn't stumbled into him and his scent trail had crossed itself several times, which made it hard to know where he was.

"It looks like Miko's warning was true. He's hard to find. If I had looked for him first I could have caught him easily but right now my sense of smell isn't very helpful."

A smiling Haru asked Dandin, "Do you want to give up? Takeshi is too good at hide and seek so you don't have to cry if you can't find him. It's okay to stop looking. There's only two minutes until the fireworks start."

Dandin shook his head. The fact that no one had been able to find him meant that Takeshi wasn't just good at hide and seek, it meant he probably had an ability that gave him an advantage just like how his nose gave him an advantage when seeking.
