Chapter 23: War

While Dandin's school life began many malicious undercurrents circled Kawagakure. The Land of Mountains become more aggressive by the week. Rogue ninjas routinely raided villages. Mysterious organizations grew stronger day by day. A radical cult took control of the Land of Frost. The world became a mess.

The Cho's of many villages could sense something was wrong, but few were able to detect the schemes their own clans were weaving against them.

"That's disturbing." In front of Ryuu Nagare, the Kawashiro no Cho, stood four Anbu shinobi. They had just finished their report, and it only contained bad news.

"Shirayamkure's secret bases are all full of ninjas again. We were able to detect six of them along their southern border and estimate there are roughly five hundred ninjas in each base. With a force that strong they could launch incursions into our territory at any time."

"What about the other teams that were sent?"

"None of them returned, but we received a few messages from them. East, North, West, they have bases on every border. They are clearly preparing to invade a major country soon."

Ryuu's heart ached when he heard that their other Anbu squads were eliminated. In every hidden village the Anbu were their active military units. They were elite shinobi who directly countered the aggression of other villages, tackled sensitive missions, and gained advantages for their nations before the start of every ninja war. He'd lost twenty such ninjas on this mission. The loss of five teams meant the loss of 15 Chunin and 5 Jounin.

"Were you able to determine the strength of the Shira-nin at each base?"

"They appear to be 10% Jounin, 30% Chunin and 60% elite Genin."

"For now."

"Yes, with their training intensity most of the Genin will reach Chunin rank in a year."

Ryuu sighed.

"I understand, please write your report and give it to the Anbu commander."

The Anbu captain saluted and left the room with his subordinates.

Ryuu took a cup of tea off his desk and sipped it. He took a few minutes to enjoy his tea before he placed it back on the desk and sighed again.

"Send word to the elders and clan leaders. We need to have a war counsel. The meeting will start in three hours. Also, tell Tadashi Shinrin to come to my office as soon as possible. We'll need to come up with a strategy before the meeting starts."

A voice from the shadows said, "yes lord."

"Summon Chikara here immediately."

Another responded, "yes lord."

With his summons sent Ryuu opened a map of Gojima, which was the continent where they all lived. He studied it carefully and marked down the location of the bases his Anbu had identified.

It didn't take long before Chikara arrived.

As soon as he entered the room Ryuu ordered all his Anbu bodyguards to leave his office. He activated a few concealment seals around the room and gave Chikara a smile.

"It looks like things are progressing as we predicted. How's your progress?"

Three hours later all the elders and clan heads had gathered in the war room. Everyone took their seats and looked at their Kawashiro no Cho with anticipation. It was late, and they would only have been summoned if there was an urgent matter to discuss.

Tadashi Shinrin stepped forward and officially started the meeting. He was the head of the Shinrin clan and leader of military affairs. He pointed to the large map on the table and said, "The Land of Mountains will attack us soon."
