The six of them had been sailing for days on end trying to put as much distance as they could between them and Blondie. Eventually, they started feeling small nudges moving to ship. Out of curiosity, they sent Val down into the water to check for any problems. It wasn't long before she came up; looking panicked.
"What's the matter?" Atlan called down as Val started to hastily climb the ropes on the side of the boat.
"We're in the merfolk's territory!" She called.
"But there wasn't a border!" Zeke pulled her up.
"They don't need one! Nobody has sailed this far!" Celeste chimed in from the crows nest. It was right then and there that the four of them decided it was best to turn around. Until Lyra heard the plan.
"We can't turn back now!"
"Why the hell not?" Zeke stepped closer to her.
"Val! Don't you want to stay?"
"Why would I?" The other girl shrugged.
"You have a chance at finding your mom!"
Val's face darkened. "No. It's too risky. She probably won't recognize me..."
"Val-" Lyra reached out.
"Uh, guys!" Called Theo. The others turned to him to see him pointing at a massive island that appeared to be well defended.
"Not good..." sighed Atlan. "Let's get this ship turned around!"
"Can't you see the opportunity we're missing?"
"Lyra, please! I can also see the lives we're potentially saving!" Atlan sighed heavily. "Look, I'm sorry for yelling. But that doesn't mean you have a right to want to put everyone else's lives in danger just because you think it will make someone else happy. Val has already said no anyway." This seemed to give Lyra some sort of revelation as she suddenly started to help turn the boat around. The group was working fairly well until everyone but Val seized abruptly.
"Guys?" She peered at the group.
"Let's stay for a bit..." muttered the demon.
"What? But you were just-"
"Listen to him, Val. You might find your mother." Celeste loomed over her.
"She's right, Val. This could be good for you..." Theo supported from the edge of the boat.
The researcher peered down at the water only to find nothing. Everything was quiet. Yet a slight vibration gently rocked the ship. Barely anything the average person would notice.
"Siren song..." The idea struck her like a brick. Val rushed over to Lyra, who was closest to her, and quickly put earplugs in the other's ears that she kept for emergency experiments. The redheaded woman suddenly shivered quickly.
"What the hell was that?"
Val began to speak until she realized Lyra couldn't actually hear her. Luckily, Val was a good researcher and kept a notebook and pen at all times. A notebook and pen that luckily hadn't been taken when they were imprisoned.
She quickly scribbled down her theory. Lyra looked around at the others, noticing the strange blankness in their eyes.
"Why aren't you being affected?" She questioned. Without a second thought, Val pointed to her gills. "Oh, yeah..."
