"Why do you carry that book everywhere?" Asked Lyra curiously.
"I'm a scientist. That's my job," responded Val as she continued to scribble down notes in her small notebook.
"I know, but why?"
"I need to study things around me..." she started to get annoyed by the girl's constant nagging.
Lyra shrugged and walked off to do something more interesting.
"Mother, give me patience..." sighed the young researcher.
"Isn't it give me strength?" Atlan chuckled behind her.
"Does it matter?"
"No. Your mother. Do what you want."
Val rolled her eyes jokingly.
"Hey! Respect your elders!"
"You're not that old Atlan! You're 30 for God's sake,"
Atlan nodded.
Even though it had only been two weeks since Val came here, she had already settled in as a new member of the group; now having her own room and space in the living room for her work.
"Whatever, kiddo..." Atlan ruffled her hair as he turned to leave.
Val looked out to the trees and waterfalls outside the balcony and decided some fresh air would be nice.
She took a deep breath and took a moment to think.
For the past two weeks, she had been thinking about the fire on and off. How did it happen? Who's to blame? Did dad make it out?
Valerie's main concern was her father. Since her mother disappeared, her dad had been her best friend and partner in crime.
He had always said her mom would be home eventually... She knew it wasn't true. He probably knew that she knew, yet still he tried to make her believe. Even at 18.
