The night was heavy with tension, each distant gunshot and explosion echoing through the old building like a reminder of the chaos outside. I lay with my head resting on Jake's lap, his fingers running gently through my hair. It was a small comfort, one that helped drown out the fear swirling around us.
As I listened to the sounds of the night-booms that lit up the darkness-I felt a familiar tightness in my chest. Each blast sent ripples of anxiety through me, but I focused on Jake. His presence was a balm, grounding me amidst the turmoil.
The others had settled down, weary from the day's efforts. Niki and Sunoo were curled up in one corner, their bodies wrapped around each other for comfort. Eunhee and Heeseung lay side by side, their expressions peaceful despite the chaos outside. Jay and Jungwon were huddled close, whispering softly to one another as if sharing secrets that might shield them from the fear creeping in.
Suddenly, a loud boom shattered the fragile quiet, and I felt Jake's body tense beneath me. He hugged me tighter, instinctively seeking reassurance, and I could sense the fear radiating off him. It made my heart ache; I wanted to protect him just as much as he wanted to protect me.
"Hey," I murmured softly, shifting to face him. I took his hand in mine, squeezing it tightly. "It's okay, Jake. Don't worry. I'm here."
He looked down at me, concern etched across his features. I could see the uncertainty in his eyes, and I wanted nothing more than to ease that fear. "We'll get through this," I whispered, my voice steady even though my own heart was racing.
As another explosion lit up the room, Jake pulled me closer, his grip tightening as if to shield me from the world outside. It was both comforting and heartbreaking, feeling his fear and his fierce protectiveness. I turned my head slightly, meeting his gaze. "I promise," I said again, trying to convey my strength.
In that moment, I lifted his hand to my lips, pressing a gentle kiss against his palm. It was a simple gesture, but it meant everything. I wanted him to know that no matter how dark things got, we had each other. I needed him to feel that.
"You mean everything to me, Sunghoon," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper, vulnerability lacing his words.
"I'm always here for you," I replied, a smile creeping onto my face despite the fear around us. "We'll face whatever comes next together."
Another boom rumbled through the night, but this time I felt a sense of calm wash over me. I tightened my embrace around Jake, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The world outside was terrifying, but in this moment, with Jake by my side, I felt a flicker of hope.
Together, we could endure anything. And that thought, that promise, kept the darkness at bay, if only for a little while.
