The morning air is colder than usual, but the sky is clear, a fragile peace that contrasts sharply with everything we've been through. The world is quiet for a moment, as if holding its breath.
I wake early, before the others, and take a few moments to pray. It's a small ritual, a way to center myself in a world that feels like it's constantly shifting. The war, the fear-it all feels so heavy, but in these few minutes of silence, I find a moment of peace.
I whisper the words I've said a thousand times, a prayer for safety-for my friends, for Sunghoon, for everyone I love. It's all I can do.
"Please, keep them safe," I murmur, my eyes closed as I bow my head. "Please watch over us today."
When I open my eyes, the camp is starting to wake up. I see the others stirring, the sound of soft voices and the crackle of a small fire. It's another day of survival. I get to work quickly, preparing food for the group, making sure everyone has something warm to eat. I can see families around us, people trying to go on with their lives despite the chaos.
We're not just surviving; we're trying to hold onto the fragments of normalcy wherever we can.
I help the older folks with their gear, carrying a few bags for them, doing what I can. As I do, I glance over at Sunghoon, who's scanning the horizon, his eyes sharp as ever. He catches my gaze for a moment and gives me a brief nod, the kind that's both reassuring and filled with quiet determination.
But then-
A loud boom echoes in the distance, and the ground shakes beneath us. A plume of smoke rises into the sky, dark and thick. The air is suddenly charged with tension. People start to panic, looking to each other for guidance.
"Sunghoon!" I call, feeling my heart race.
He's already moving before I can even finish speaking, his face set with urgency. "Stay here, Jake," he commands firmly. "It's not safe."
I want to argue, to go with him, but I can see the steel in his eyes. He doesn't want me out there. Not now.
"I'll be okay," he says, his voice softening, but the words don't change the firmness of his tone. "You need to stay with the others."
I take a step forward, my heart pounding, desperate to be by his side, but before I can say anything, Sunghoon pulls me into a brief hug. It's a tight embrace, just enough to feel his heartbeat against mine.
"I love you," I whisper, the words almost slipping out without me even thinking about it.
Sunghoon's grip tightens, and for a moment, the world around us fades. He looks into my eyes with a quiet intensity, and I feel everything we've been through, everything we still face.
"I love you too jake" he says quietly, his voice so steady despite the danger.
I pull back reluctantly, trying to steady my own breath. He gives me a small, reassuring smile before turning and rushing toward the sounds of the chaos. I watch him go, my heart heavy in my chest, knowing I won't be able to follow.
The Explosion
The minutes stretch into eternity as I wait, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts. It feels wrong to be sitting here, away from Sunghoon, but I know it's what he wants. The world outside is crumbling, and all I can do is hope he stays safe.
Then-BOOM!
The ground shakes violently, a deafening explosion that rattles the air. The sound is almost too much to bear. I watch, paralyzed, as smoke billows up into the sky, darkening the bright morning.
My heart leaps into my throat. My body reacts before my mind does. I rush forward, instinctively trying to find my friends, to find Sunghoon, but I'm too late.
The explosion is closer now-too close. The camp erupts into chaos. People are screaming, running, scattering in every direction. I hear the sound of gunfire, and then, the earth shakes again.
Another explosion, louder this time.
I stumble forward, my legs giving out under me. My heart is pounding in my chest, my body moving before I can even think.
And then-
Pain.
It's sharp, sudden, overwhelming.
A searing heat shoots through my abdomen, and my vision blurs. I gasp, falling to the ground, the air knocked out of me. The world tilts and spins.
I try to lift myself, to get up, but the pain is unbearable. My stomach feels like it's on fire, and when I touch my side, my hand comes away slick with blood. I can't breathe. I can't think.
I hear voices-shouting, frantic. Soldiers are pulling people out of the wreckage, helping families to safety. But all I can think about is Sunghoon.
"Sunghoon..." I whisper, but it's barely audible. My body trembles, the shock starting to set in.
I can feel the blood pooling beneath me, seeping into the earth. The pain is all-consuming, and I can't think straight. My eyes flutter, the edges of my vision going dark.
But even through the haze, even as my body begins to fade, one thought remains clear in my mind. The one thing I can hold onto.
Please, God... please save Sunghoon. Please keep him safe. Please.... Please....
I close my eyes, unable to hold onto consciousness any longer.
