I thank my receptionist as she delivers today's post to my desk.
I scan over it all, sorting it into piles of each staff. My hands stop as I read a letter addressed to me, my ears beginning to ring.
It's a claim against me from my old boss.
He's starting a case against me for taking my clients with me.
I read over the first hearing date at the court, counting it to be in two weeks.
I stand up and leave my office, searching for Hannah, who is making us drinks in the kitchen.
She stares at me questioningly as I walk in, but I shove the letter into her hand.
I watch nervously as she reads over before staring at me with pure anger in her eyes.
"Is this real?" she asks, her upper lip curling.
"Unfortunately," I turn my attention to finishing our teas, needing something to do.
"Well, surely he has no case, right" she asks me as she re-reads the paper.
"Doesn't matter. He knows it's going to take the majority of our resources to beat this. He's trying to bankrupt our business before it's fully started," I shrug and carry the mugs to our office.
Hannah follows and shuts the door behind her.
We sit at our desks, notepads and pens in front of us.
"Well, we've at least got to try," she sips on her brew.
"We will, but this might require a loan so we can pay overtime and the endless court fees," I roll my eyes as my mind begins to work out the obscene calculations.
"Would the Ashfords help?"
"I can't ask them for more. They've already done enough for us... for me," I sip my tea morosely.
"We have to," Hannah pushes.
"No Hannah," my voice is harsh and emotional, "We do this alone. I don't want them to hear a word about this case."
She matches my mood, glaring at me.
"Fine, but it's on your head if this business fails," she stands up and leaves, slamming the door closed as she leaves.
"Don't I know it," I mutter, sitting back in my chair.
I stare at the corner of the room, trying to figure out a way through this without fucking over the business before I have a chance to make my mark as a managing partner.
It would ruin my career.
Carlie Knight: Law firm fails after two months of being open.
I can imagine the headlines now.
My phone ringing snaps me out of my whirlwind of destructive thoughts.
