An unnerving, overwhelming urge to comfort Carlie streams through my blood.

I still want to murder the motherfucker to hurt her, but that can wait for now.

God, what has happened to me?

I used to be the brother who would turn into a murderous psychopath at the flick of a switch, but Elijah seems to be taking that role this time.

I keep Carlie's quivering body pressed into my side as I watch Elijah's knuckles turn white in anger on the steering wheel.

I squeeze my arm around her, kissing the top of her head as her crying turns into exhausted sniffles.

We all stay in silence, Elijah breaking the speed limit to get back to our apartment, whilst Zach and I keep Carlie close to us in the back seat. She's sandwiched between us in the best way we know to provide comfort and a feeling of safety for her.

We guide her into the elevator, pressing the button for the top floor once we are all inside. Elijah stays brooding in the corner, looking almost possessed from his lack of blinking as he glares straight ahead.

Carlie doesn't seem to notice, though, too busy pressed into Zach's chest with his arms wrapped around her.

For some reason, it doesn't bother me like I thought it would. To see her in my devious little brother's arms only seems to happy that she is receiving comfort.

What has this girl done to me?

The elevator doors ping open and we walk inside. Elijah immediately storms into his office, the slam of the door shutting echoing around the room.

Carlie's bloodshot eyes take in the floor to ceiling windows around the apartment, along with the pure white decor.

Zach and I look to each other, silently discussing Elijah's mood. Deciding to distract Carlie from his lack of presence, he guides her over to the l-shaped cream sofa and covers her in a faux fur porcelain blanket.

I head to the kitchen and use the hot-tap to make her a cup of tea, adding a splash of milk to it.

I take it into her and set it down on the glossy grey table in front of her. She smiles softly at me and I take the moment to analyse her face.

Her eyes are red from all the crying, her beautifully smooth skin more pale than usual. Her body language is worrying, her shoulders completely deflated as if she's trying to make herself as small as possible.

"Dude, stop staring," Zach kicks my leg from his seat next to her. She giggles slightly and reaches out for her tea as I sit on the other side of her.

"I'm okay," she reassures us both as she sets her mug down. Zach and I exchange a look over her head but she rolls her eyes and shakes her head.

"Stop having secret brotherly conversations about me."
