In which Mirabel explains the Family to children:

(Nobody's pov)

It was finally the long-awaited day. The day that the youngest Madrigal will receive his gift.

The whole family was getting things ready for the ceremony. Except Mirabel. She was watching the village kids while everyone got themselves ready for the party.

"Do you know how the Encanto formed?" Mirabel asked the children surrounding her. They all shook their heads, saying they didn't know the story.

"Well, it all began just after my mama, tia Pepa and tio Bruno had been born. The village my Abuela y Abuelo lived in was attacked and they had to flee. Many families, all of yours included, joined them on their journey for a safe place to call home.

"My Abuelo Pedro was lost to us, and in my abuela's grief, we got a miracle. The miracle created the Encanto and my home, La Casita.

"When Mama, Tia and Tio turned five, the miracle blessed them with gifts that they could use to help the village."

"What were their gifts?" One little girl asked.

"My Tia Pepa's moods affect the weather. When she is unhappy, it can rain. My tio Bruno can see the future. Despite what everyone thinks, he's not a bad person. He wants to keep us safe. My Mom Julieta can heal you with food, so if you're hurt, go to her."

"Who else is in your family?" A little boy asked.

"Well, three people fell in love with la familia Madrigal. Tio Felix married Pepa, and Tia Y/n married Bruno. And of course, my dad Agustin married my Mom.

"Tio Felix and Tia Pepa have two kids. Mi prima Dolores can hear a pin drop. My cousin Camilo can shapeshift into other people.

"Tia Y/n and Tio Bruno has three kids. Reyna can discover things, and her twin brother Pedro can move things with his mind. Their little brother, Primo Antonio will get his gift tonight."

"My oldest sister, Isabella can grow plants, and my older sister Luisa is super strong."

"What about you Mirabel? What is your gift?" A young boy asked. I gave a wistful smile. If someone had asked me this before the Casita fell six years ago, I would have hidden my feelings of uselessness behind a mask of cheerfulness.

"I brought the magic back to the family, so I guess that makes me the new keeper of the family magic."

(Y/n's pov)

A lot has changed in the past six years.

I never would have expected to be here. Standing by a new door, with my husband beside me. Waiting for our youngest son to get his gift.

If someone had told me that I'd be here today, I would have gone to my room to cry.

Six years ago, Bruno had been hidden away in the casa's walls. Alma was blaming me for his disappearance, and the Casita was cracking, just like each member of the family. Everyone was cracking under the pressure of perfection Alma was placing on them.

Eventually, Casita fell, and the village came together to help us rebuild. Bruno returned to the rest of the family, and Mirabel brought back the magic.

For weeks afterwards the entire family would have nightly talks to air out all of the stress and pressure we had been under all these years. There were many apologies given by various members of the family, with Alma having to apologize to nearly everyone in the family.

There were stories of hidden pain and fear, tears and healing.

Seven months after Casita was rebuilt, Bruno and I discovered we were expecting.

Which leads us to where I am now, watching my five-year-old son preparing to walk up to his door.

I couldn't help but feel nervous, remembering the last gift ceremony we had witnessed. The night my husband had that vision and left.

I couldn't help but feel worried this ceremony would end in a similar fashion.

If Antonio doesn't get a gift, what will it mean for the family? The magic? The Encanto?

Would Alma demand another vision from my husband? Would he leave again to protect our son, like he had for Mirabel and me?

I took a deep breath as I felt Bruno squeeze my hand gently. I looked over and saw the understanding look he was giving me. I sighed, and smiled softly, laying my head on his shoulder. Bruno pulled me closer.

"Everything will be fine mi amor, lo prometo." He whispered. "Things are a lot better now. Even if he doesn't get a gift, I won't leave again."

"Don't worry tia." Mirabel whispered as she turned. "Things will work out just as it should. Our family is stronger than ever thanks to you."

"You're the one who saved us Mirabel." I smiled at my niece. She shook her head with a smile.

"You protected me for those years. Protected me from Abuela's anger, and protected me from the pitying looks from the villagers."

Mirabel moved to stand next to the newest door, in the spot that Alma usually stood. Bruno and I stood behind her.

Alma stood on the steps in front of Antonio's door, facing the family and villagers.

"Fifty years ago, in our darkest moment, we were blessed with a miracle. We were given an Encanto. On their fifth birthday, my children all received their gifts. Over the years our miracle grew. There were a few bumps in the road, though.

"It took Mirabel and Y/n to show me that our magic is not the gift. The gift is our love for eachother. Six years ago, the magic faltered. Mirabel and my daughter-in-law, Y/N worked to save our home. To save the magic. They taught me a lesson I needed. Magic is not the miracle. The miracle is us. Mi familia, and the bonds we share. They restored those bonds that were on the verge of snapping. They brought my Bruno home to us. It is thanks to them, and to all of you, that our home was rebuilt. And it is thanks to Mirabel, that the magic has been restored.

"Today, we remember all of these things as one more steps into the light. Our beloved Antonio will join the family and receive his own gift, to use as he chooses. So as we celebrate him this day, let us also celebrate the love we hold for each other!" Cheers rang out among the villagers, and our family clapped for our son.

Antonio made his way passed our family, and up the stairs where Mirabel waited by his door.

Mirabel held her hands out to her youngest primo. I was proud as I listened to the whispered words she uttered to the young boy.

"Are you ready to receive your gift hombrecito?" She asked. Antonio nodded shyly.

"Don't worry. Gift or no gift, we love you more than anything. Go, open your door."

He gave her a quick smile and turned to face his door. Antonio hesitated for just a moment before grasping the doorknob.

He looked amazed as the magic flared up beneath his fingertips. The door glowed bright for a minute as a toucan appeared and landed on our son's shoulder.

It squawked at him, and he told the colorful bird that he could understand it. The bird squawked again, and he told it that its friends can come.

A whole bunch of animals rushed into Casita, and the image of an older Antonio surrounded by animals appeared on his door.

Bruno and I smiled at each other, then at our youngest son. He grinned in excitement back at us.

It was a gift that was perfect for our animal loving son.
