A Friendship Surprise

Rousseau's was packed. Typical for a Friday evening in the French Quarter. Another thing that was typical? Me getting drinks with Klaus Mikaelson. Despite his outwardly gruff personality, the guy had grown on me. Dare I even say, I would call him my best friend.

Klaus was currently being his usual self, laughing at and overly mocking my dating life.

"Three months? You have been waiting that long for the idiot to ask you out? Why are you still talking to him?"

I huffed, annoyed at his tone. "Because. He's a good texter."

"A good texter." Klaus rolled his eyes. "You truly need better standards than 'he's a good texter'."

"Well if you were out in the dating pool a little more, maybe we wouldn't have to talk about my terrible luck in picking out men."

"Your so-called 'terrible luck' is what keeps you coming back to me to rant about them. If your dating life was any better, I don't know what we'd talk about every Friday night."

"You're right." I leaned back in my seat with mock flair. "If it weren't for me, you'd have no entertainment. You'd be completely bored out of your mind. You're very welcome, by the way."

"Oh yes, I am truly in your debt." Klaus snorted. "Without your dating misadventures, I'd be stuck watching paint dry."

I arched a brow at him playfully and took a sip of my red wine.

"So what's new with the Mikaelson fam? Are Marcel and Rebekah still getting it on behind your back?"

He gave me a look that might as well have said 'bring that up again and I will murder you on the spot'.

"Fine, fine." I shook my head in disbelief. "Go ahead and plan whatever diabolical thing you've concocted to punish them for not telling you. But I do have to say, I think the two of them are cute together."

Klaus plowed on as if I hadn't even spoken, a habit he did quite a lot when he was avoiding a topic that had been stoking his anger.

"To answer your question, Elijah and Hayley are still dancing around one another. Which has been infuriating and also a little amusing to watch. As for Kol... well, he's causing trouble somewhere, I'm sure."

"What a loving and devoted brother you are." I replied, sarcasm dripping in my tone.

He let out half a laugh. "Well, if loving and devoted means enabling my siblings' bad habits and keeping them out of trouble, then sure, I'm the best brother in the world."

I laughed, downing the rest of my wine and sitting up in my seat. "Want another round?"

"Absolutely." Klaus smirked. "I'd say I'm a little concerned by how quickly you just finished that glass, but then I remember who I'm talking to."

"Ha ha." I deadpanned. "Another whiskey for the jokester?"

He nodded. "Thank you, love."

I sidled my way up to the bar, greeting Camille, the sweet but sassy bartender who Klaus introduced me to a couple months ago. I'd never seen anyone but myself hold their own against Klaus, so I liked her right away.

"Hey, Cami. Can we get another round, please?"

"Sure thing." She grinned over at me. "Just give me a sec."

I looked down the bar, most of the stools seeming occupied.

"Busy night, tonight. More than usual."

Cami nodded. "There was a huge rush right before you came in. I'm not sure what's going on, but it's a mad house in here."
