Lucy's morning started early. The early shift called her name. She hated leaving the kids and Tim but Lucy bent down, hugging Liv, who clung to her in sleepy protest. "Mummy has to go, sweetheart, but Daddy's here, and I'll be home soon," she whispered, brushing a kiss over her daughter's forehead. She leaned over Harry, who was propped up in Tim's arms, and gave his chubby cheek a gentle kiss. He cooed and reached out a tiny hand, grasping her finger before letting go.
With a final kiss to Tim, Lucy gathered her things and left, her heart warmed by the family she'd be coming back to.
Tim dove into the morning routine as soon as she left, starting with Liv's breakfast while bouncing Harry on his hip. "You think mummy will bring us donuts after work?" he asked Liv, getting a bright grin and a nod in response. Liv loved breakfast with her dad, her eyes lighting up as they chatted, her giggles filling the kitchen while Tim managed to get Harry settled in his high chair. The morning was a mix of scrambled eggs, spilled milk, and quick cuddles, all signs of the organized chaos that was their life with two young kids.
Meanwhile, Lucy was already at the station, getting briefed for her mission. Her partner for the day was Jackson, and together they went over the details of a high-risk operation planned in a nearby district.
As they arrived at the location, everything seemed tense, the air thick with an unspoken warning. They moved carefully, Jackson scanning their surroundings as Lucy watched their backs. Suddenly, shots rang out. Chaos erupted around them, and in a split-second reaction, Lucy threw herself in front of Jackson, shielding him as a burst of gunfire erupted from a nearby building.
She felt a burning, searing pain in her side as a bullet found its mark. Staggering backward, Lucy pressed her hand to her side, her vision briefly blurring as she registered the warmth of her own blood against her fingers. The bullet had lodged just below her rib cage, missing any organs but leaving a deep, painful wound. She fought against the dizziness, determined to stay conscious and protect her partner.
Jackson turned, horror flashing across his face as he realized what had happened. "Lucy!" he shouted, rushing to her side, helping her take cover as she gritted her teeth against the pain.
Even through the haze of pain, Lucy's thoughts flickered to Tim, Liv, and baby Harry waiting at home. She clutched Jackson's arm, her voice determined. "I'm not going down, Jackson. Let's finish this." Despite the agony coursing through her side, she pressed on, her resolve fierce, driven by the thought of her family.
As Lucy gritted her teeth, focused and determined, she zeroed in on the shooter's position. Her side throbbed with a burning pain, but she pushed it aside, raising her weapon and taking careful aim. One quick shot, and she brought the shooter down, ending the immediate threat. As the adrenaline faded, though, her vision blurred, her legs went weak, and she collapsed, her body finally giving in to the injury.
Meanwhile, at the station, Tim was in the middle of a briefing when he caught a fragmented radio call: "Officer down... gunshot wound... female officer."
His heart stilled. Anxiety coiled around his chest. He glanced at Angela, hoping for reassurance, but her face had gone pale as she listened through her earpiece.
"What is it? Who's hurt?" he demanded, already fearing the answer. When Angela finally looked at him, her expression was grim.
"It's Lucy," she confirmed quietly.
The room seemed to spin, and Tim felt a rush of dread unlike anything he'd ever experienced. "Where is she? Is she conscious?" he demanded, his voice barely controlled, each word edged with fear. Angela tried to assure him, reminding him that medical assistance was on the scene, but her words barely registered. He grabbed his keys and bolted from the station, his mind racing.
