The kitchen was quiet except for the soft clink of dishes as Lucy cleared around, the rhythm of everyday chores almost soothing, but still not enough to ease the weight that had settled on her shoulders. The morning had been a whirlwind of emotions—exhaustion, frustration, and lingering tension. She knew she was tired, but every movement seemed heavy, every thought slower than it should be. Still, she pressed on, moving through the motions for Liv's sake.
Liv, seated at the kitchen table, was enjoying her breakfast. She looked up at her mother with wide, innocent eyes, chewing slowly as she took in the quiet air of the room. There was a soft pause before she asked, her voice filled with a sweet concern that only a child could have: "Mummy, why are you sad?"
Lucy's heart squeezed at the question, but she quickly masked her feelings with a smile. She turned toward her daughter, forcing a calmness into her voice that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Mummy's okay, baby," she said, smiling gently. "I'm not sad."
Liv furrowed her brow, still sensing something wasn't quite right. She didn't believe it, and her tone shifted with more curiosity and worry. "Mummy, you look sad," she repeated softly.
Lucy took a deep breath, her smile softening but still not completely genuine. She wanted to reassure her, to make everything seem okay, but the weight of the argument with Tim and the stress of the past few days lingered too heavily in her chest. "Mummy's okay, sweetheart," she said again, this time with more tenderness, hoping Liv would let it go. "Just a little tired, that's all."
Liv's gaze shifted toward Tim, who was standing nearby, silently observing the interaction. She tilted her head slightly and then, with the innocence only a child could possess, spoke up again, her voice gentle but full of care: "Daddy gives good cuddles."
It was the simplicity of the words that hit Lucy hardest. She wasn't sure why, but Liv's concern, her desire for everything to be okay, made something inside Lucy soften, even if just for a moment. She glanced at Tim, and Liv followed her gaze, her eyes filled with expectation.
"Daddy, can you give mummy a cuddle?" Liv asked, her small voice a mixture of hope and sincerity.
Lucy's breath caught in her throat. She could feel the tension between her and Tim—an unresolved knot of frustration and hurt that still loomed over them. She wasn't ready to confront it, not yet. But seeing Liv's face, so worried and earnest, softened something inside Lucy, making her realize that maybe she needed this, even if she didn't know how to ask for it herself.
Tim, seeing the moment and hearing Liv's request, opened his arms slowly, a silent invitation. His expression was soft, his eyes filled with regret and a desire to make things right, but knowing, too, that the words might not be enough just yet.
Lucy hesitated. She didn't want to be the one to break, to show vulnerability. But Liv's wide, concerned eyes and the soft pull of Tim's arms felt like an opportunity to move forward, even if just for a moment. She could feel the weight of the argument still hanging between them, but Liv needed them both, needed them to be okay.
After a beat, Lucy finally nodded, her resolve cracking slightly. She walked into Tim's arms, letting the tension slip from her shoulders as he pulled her into a gentle hug. His warmth surrounded her, and for a brief moment, everything else faded away. She closed her eyes, letting herself feel the comfort of the embrace, knowing that even if the road ahead was uncertain, they could take it one step at a time.
Tim held her tightly, his hands rubbing her back gently, trying to offer her the reassurance she had needed all along. "I'm sorry, Luce," he whispered into her hair. "I'll do better, I promise."
Liv watched the scene unfold, her small face lighting up with relief as her parents embraced. It wasn't perfect—nothing ever was—but in that moment, it was enough. She knew that even if the world felt overwhelming sometimes, her parents were trying, and that was all she needed to see.
