The warm summer sun was high in the sky as Tim, Lucy, Harry, and Liv arrived at Nyla's house for the much-anticipated BBQ. The scent of grilled food drifted through the air, mingling with the laughter and chatter of friends gathering in the backyard. The day felt perfect for a relaxed afternoon spent with close friends.
Wes and Angela, along with their boys Jack and Alex, were already there, making themselves comfortable around the large picnic table that had been set up on the lawn. The children were already running around, their joyful shrieks filling the air as they played together, while the adults exchanged stories and caught up.
Nyla greeted them warmly at the door, giving Lucy a tight hug. "It's so good to see you guys!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Lucy smiled, feeling a sense of relief and comfort at the familiar faces. "Thanks for inviting us. It's been a hectic few days, so this is exactly what we need."
Nyla nodded understandingly. "I get it. Just relax and enjoy yourselves. We're so glad you could make it."
Tim waved over to Wes, who was flipping burgers on the grill, and soon the two were deep in conversation. Meanwhile, Lucy, holding Harry in her arms, wandered over to where Liv was eagerly picking out her favorite food, with Alex and Jack following close behind.
"Liv, how's the food?" Lucy asked, brushing a stray lock of hair from her daughter's face.
Liv grinned, her face lit up with excitement. "It's so yummy, mama! I want to eat all of it!" She paused for a moment, glancing over at the other kids. "Can I play after I eat?"
"Of course, sweetie," Lucy replied, giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead before turning to check on Harry. He had been a little fussy that morning, but as usual, being around his family seemed to calm him down. His small hands were grasping her shirt, his face pressed against her chest as he clung to her, clearly feeling the comfort of being with his mama.
"Hey, little man," Tim said softly, his hand resting gently on Harry's back. "You okay, buddy?"
Harry let out a small sigh and squirmed in Lucy's arms, clearly more interested in the new environment and all the exciting sounds around him.
"I think he's going to need some time to adjust," Lucy said, a little tired from carrying him around for most of the day, but still smiling at the scene. "He's been a bit off recently, but he loves being around everyone. The fresh air will do him good."
Wes called over from the grill, "You guys need anything? Got some sausages and burgers coming right up!"
"Perfect timing," Tim said, making his way over to join him, and Lucy settled into a nearby lounge chair with Harry in her arms. As the kids ran around playing, Liv and Jack were laughing as they chased each other in a circle, their energetic giggles filling the yard. Alex was sitting next to her, happy to be part of the fun, while the adults chatted over their drinks, enjoying the break from their usual routine.
For a few moments, everything felt peaceful. The breeze rustled through the trees, the sun bathed the backyard in golden light, and the sound of conversation mixed with the laughter of children. As Lucy rocked Harry gently in her arms, she felt a wave of gratitude wash over her. It was easy to get lost in the chaos of daily life with two young children, but moments like these—surrounded by family and friends—reminded her of the beauty in the simple things.
"How's Harry doing?" Angela asked as she walked over, holding a cold drink in her hand. "He looks like he's having a good time."
Lucy nodded, smiling. "Yeah, he's adjusting. He's been a little clingy today, but I think the fresh air is helping. Hopefully, he'll settle down soon."
