At first, I had two different directions in which this fic could've gone. After I started writing, the other just seemed to fit the story more, so I decided to turn this one into an IF instead of letting it fade into the back of my mind.
This part is taking place in the middle of that story, or even close to the end, so... good luck figuring out what happened, I guess.
Enjoy!

So, I wrote this chapter about four months ago, not sure whether to really put this out in the open, but I decided to actually do it now.
And also... wow, it's already been a year since I started writing this fic, huh? I didn't really notice that fact, so consider this... a late one year celebration, of sorts?

I was standing right in front of Subaru. The village around us was burning down, but neither of us were trying to help the viligers. Well, I wasn't, Subaru definitely was but I was stopping him every time.
Still, Emilia, Ram, Rem, Garfiel and Otto were definitely helping while we were standing here. It's not like I was completely stopping whoever wanted to help, it's just that I wanted to talk to Subaru specifically. I have also made sure to neutralize Beatrice. She wasn't dead, just not here for now.
Subaru: "What the hell is wrong with you?! How did this happen?! Why did this happen?! Why are you now with them?!"
Cylob: "I believe I explained everything already tho'. To me it seems like you just don't want to accept reality."
Subaru: "But it doesn't make sense! You joined those bastards just because you lost all emotions and you want to get them back?! How can I believe that?!"
How desperate.
It was clear that Subaru was panicking and denying reality. The shock of seeing me on the other side must've been very great if this was the case.
I wasn't expecting this. I have talked with Subaru before, yes, but I've never thought of us as close. The fact that he's so shocked wasn't within my calculations.
I think I can somewhat see why Echidna likes him now.
Cylob: "Whether you believe it or not, it's the truth."
Subaru: "How can that be the truth?!" He says through gritted teeth. "Wasn't your goal to put as many smiles on people's faces as possible? To save as many people as possible? Where did all that go?!"
Cylob: "I just said to you, I have no emotions. I have no attachment to people anymore."
I wanted to say that it was annoying how he couldn't understand, but I couldn't. It wasn't annoying. It wasn't exasperating. It was just nothing.
Subaru: "But... how can you live like this? Killing people all for your emotions... Do you not feel feel guilty?!"
Cylob: "I guess your brain isn't working properly since this is a bad situation, but how many times do I have to say that I don't have any emotions? I don't feel anything, including guilt."
Subaru: "But...!"
He looked down at the ground in defeat. After a while of incoherent rambling, he took a deep breath to regain his cool.
He looked up at me, while at the same time taking the whip off his side and attacking me with it.
But just as the whip was about to hit me, it disappeared.
