The car door shut with a soft thud, and the black Bentley roared off into the night.
Rachael Hall stood rooted in place, her nails digging deeply into her palms as she watched the car disappear into the darkness. Her thoughts churned: What is Sara Hart to Adrian Blake? Why was she in his car?
Their interaction had been anything but ordinary.
The last time Rachael Hall saw them together, they didn't even speak. Sara Hart was just a stranger. She had never heard of anyone like Sara in Adrian's life before.
This woman was worth investigating.
The atmosphere inside the car was calm, but Charlie Scott's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts.
He maintained a professional demeanor as he drove, but his mind spun with the scene he had just witnessed. His gaze flicked briefly to the rearview mirror. Sara sat beside Adrian, looking soft and demure in her cream sweater with her hair tied up in a bun—a picture of innocence and sweetness.
Could it be? Charlie Scott thought, a bold idea striking him. Did Adrian Blake... sponsor a student?
In the back seat, Sara's surprise at seeing Rachael Hall quickly dissolved after hearing Adrian's curt response: "Throw it away."
Any discomfort she might have felt vanished.
"Hungry?" Adrian Blake asked, turning toward her.
Sara shook her head. "Sorry for being so late. One of the instruments malfunctioned, and it took a while to fix it."
Adrian ignored her apology and instead seemed intrigued. "You can fix instruments?"
Sara smiled, her tone earnest. "In our field, spending long hours in the lab doesn't mean all of it goes toward conducting experiments. A good portion of the time is spent fixing equipment. It's not uncommon to end up unscrewing parts, disassembling, and reassembling everything repeatedly."
Her eyes lit up as she talked about her work, a subtle spark of excitement in her voice.
Adrian couldn't help but wonder what she looked like in her lab, focused and determined.
Sara finished her explanation and glanced out the window before turning back to him. "Why didn't you drive today?"
Adrian nodded toward the front. "This is Charlie Scott, my assistant. I had meetings outside the office this afternoon, so he drove."
Sara smiled politely at Charlie Scott through the rearview mirror. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Scott."
Charlie Scott nodded stiffly, still reeling from everything he was hearing.
"Do you want to eat at home, or should we stop somewhere?" Adrian asked, breaking the silence.
Hearing the casual question, Charlie Scott nearly choked. They're living together?!
Sara tilted her head, considering. "Let's eat out. My treat."
Adrian raised an eyebrow but smiled. "Alright."
Sara pulled out her phone, scrolling through restaurant options. "What do you feel like eating?"
"I'm not picky," Adrian replied smoothly.
Charlie Scott nearly lost control of the steering wheel. Need to be more picky? This man has a laundry list of food preferences—no fish, no fried food, no spicy dishes, no fast food!
Sara glanced up, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "How about French Bistro?"
Charlie Scott braced himself, expecting a polite refusal.
"Sure," Adrian replied after a moment's pause.
Sara laughed, leaning closer. "Really? My... friend took me there once. It's small, crowded, and not exactly fancy. Are you sure you'll be comfortable?"
Adrian caught the slight hesitation before the word friend but didn't press. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Charlie Scott stared at the road ahead, incredulous. This can't be the same germaphobic Adrian I've worked with for years.
When they reached their destination, Charlie Scott pulled up and hesitated, unsure how to address Sara.
"Call me Sara," she offered with a smile.
"Miss Hart," Charlie Scott corrected himself quickly. "Should I wait here, or...?"
Sara shook her head. "No need, but would you like to join us?"
Charlie Scott waved his hands frantically. "No, no, I'm fine!"
Sara smiled, not pressing further.
She and Adrian stepped out of the car, walking side by side.
Adrian soon realized the "bistro" she mentioned was a tiny restaurant.
He gave her a pointed look.
Sara's eyes crinkled as she laughed softly. "I thought French food might be a better idea for dinner."
Adrian smirked, realizing she had been teasing him all along.
After dinner, Charlie Scott drove them back to the villa. On the way, Adrian received a call from Eric Thorne.
"Alright," Adrian replied into the phone. "I'll check if she's free."
After hanging up, he turned to Sara. "Eric Thorne's new resort is opening this weekend, and he invited us to join the celebration. Do you have time?"
Sara hesitated briefly before realizing Adrian would obviously be going. "I don't have any plans," she replied.
Adrian nodded, typing into his phone: We're coming.
Within seconds, a reply lit up the screen from Lucas Graves: Oh, this will be good. I'll swap shifts if I have to—count me in!
Sara glanced over curiously. "Does that mean we're skipping our usual visit to your grandma this week?"
Since moving into the villa, they had made it a point to visit the elder Mrs. Blake weekly.
Adrian's lips curved upward slightly. "If she knows I'm taking you somewhere, she'll probably be happier than seeing us at home."
Charlie Scott's grip on the steering wheel tightened. His curiosity had reached a boiling point. What is going on between them? Are they dating?
When they reached the villa, Charlie Scott parked and watched as Adrian stepped out. Unable to contain himself any longer, he blurted, "Mr. Blake..."
Adrian stopped mid-step, turning back to face him.
Charlie Scott swallowed hard, determined to get an answer. "Miss Hart, what's your relationship with her?"
Adrian's gaze flicked to Sara, standing a few steps away. He then turned back to Charlie Scott, his tone matter-of-fact:
"I'm married to her."
Charlie Scott's jaw dropped, forming a perfect O. His thoughts spiraled into chaos, forgetting even the most basic principles of composure.
"Anything else?" Adrian asked coolly.
Charlie Scott shook his head mechanically, his mind blank.
Adrian turned and walked inside with a faint smirk, leaving Charlie Scott standing in stunned silence, his world thoroughly upended.
