Sara Hart silently vowed never to trust Adrian Blake's words again.

He'd said it would be quick—but it had lasted for hours.

He'd been incredibly enthusiastic this time. At first, she could keep up with him, but eventually, she was too exhausted to respond. She'd drifted off to sleep, barely registering when he carried her to the bathroom for a bath.

No surprise—she woke up late.

Sitting in the passenger seat of Adrian's car, Sara puffed out her cheeks in annoyance, staring resolutely out the window. She was determined to ignore him.

Adrian had woken up early as usual. After making breakfast, he hadn't bothered waking her up. Sara had stirred on her own at nearly nine-thirty.

"I thought you were tired, so I let you sleep in," Adrian said, his voice calm as he navigated the streets.

"And whose fault is that?" Sara huffed, turning to glare at him. "Who told you to keep going for so long?"

She glared, her cheeks puffed in frustration. She'd told him she couldn't take any more, but he'd coaxed her into giving in for just one more round.

Adrian's lips curved in a soft smile, his voice laced with quiet amusement. "It's my fault. I'll try to restrain myself next time."

The deep timbre of his voice—like the resonant hum of a cello—seeped into her ears, melting her irritation faster than she could maintain it.

"I see it's already nine-forty," Adrian murmured as he glanced at the clock. "You'll make it before ten. I'll wake you earlier tomorrow, alright?"

Sara stubbornly kept her gaze on the window. "I have no meetings today, but Professor Baker usually arrives early. I'm going to be the last one in the lab..."

She rubbed her sore lower back and gave him a serious look. "Let's make a deal. On work nights, no more than midnight, okay? If you go past midnight..."

She paused, racking her brain for a suitable punishment.

Adrian chuckled, a low rumble escaping his chest. "And if I break the rule... I'll sleep on the couch?"

Sara's eyes brightened. "Exactly. You'll sleep on the couch."

"Then I'd better be careful," Adrian teased, amusement gleaming in his dark eyes.

Sara felt her face heat. The way he humored her, like coaxing a child, made her feel both embarrassed and helpless.

Adrian pulled up to the front when they arrived at the chemistry building.

In the past, Sara had only allowed him to drop her off at the school gate. He'd never insisted otherwise. But things were different now.

Adrian grabbed a packed breakfast from the back seat and walked her to the lab entrance.

"There's no need to walk me to the door..." Sara mumbled, a little shy.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Why? You don't want your lab mates to see?"

"No, that's not it. I just..."

"I want to."

"...Alright."

Inside, the lab was warm, the office door closed to keep the chill-out. Adrian handed her the breakfast. "Eat it while it's hot."

"I will."

"And message me tonight when you're done. I'll pick you up."

He leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead.
