the ex axis

the old man shoots an X

on the government tanked on his orchard.

he waits for retribution

just as justice waits for him.

*

i don't think we were banished from eden.

i think we walked out bored of its purity.

there were many things there but not love.

we walked out of eden, i think, for love,

and so god is our first ex,

because we didn't believe in him,

and we've been trying to move on ever since.

*

when his body drooped and began to rot

jesus looked like a flag of flesh

that was crossing out the cross itself.

when the boy, drunk on saffron, climbs up

the church to vandalise it, he looks like a cross

of flesh that has been turned into a flag of excommunication.

*

you were my world but now you're my ex.

if you tilt the gridlines on the map

you'll see the world for what it is:

a web of Xs, exes, and excess,

on a gathering of water and dust.
