laugh you're being watched
laugh don't laugh on yourself its bitterness
will be caught and you'll be killed
laugh in a way that you don't look too happy
otherwise they'll doubt that this person is not a participant in shame
and you'll be killed
while laughing don't let anyone know what you're laughing at
let everyone believe that you laugh a defeated
laugh of your ownness like everyone else
like everyone else laughs instead of speaking
as long as the high round dome echoes,
you can speak to yourself
as the echo fades then laugh
because if they find you quiet you'll be accused of protest
if you laugh in the end everyone will laugh at you and you'll be saved
laugh but avoid jokes
they have words
what if they have meaning in them someone gave a hundred years ago
it's better that you laugh when someone's speaking
so that no utterance remains meaningful
and laugh in circumstances
where it's obligatory
like when the powerful hit the poor
where no one can do anything
except the poor person
and even he usually laughs
laugh laugh quickly laugh
before they leave
while shaking their hand
lowering your gaze

हँसो हँसो जल्दी हँसो ~ रघुवीर सहाय
हँसो तुम पर निगाह रखी जा रही है
हँसो अपने पर न हँसना क्योंकि उसकी कड़वाहट
पकड़ ली जाएगी और तुम मारे जाओगे
ऐसे हँसो कि बहुत ख़ुश न मालूम हो
वरना शक होगा कि यह शख़्स शर्म में शामिल नहीं
और मारे जाओगे
हँसते-हँसते किसी को जानने मत दो किस पर हँसते हो
सबको मानने दो कि तुम सबकी तरह परास्त होकर
एक अपनापे की हँसी हँसते हो
जैसे सब हँसते हैं बोलने के बजाय
जितनी देर ऊँचा गोल गुंबद गूँजता रहे, उतनी देर
तुम बोल सकते हो अपने से
गूँज थमते-थमते फिर हँसना
क्योंकि तुम चुप मिले तो प्रतिवाद के जुर्म में फँसे
अंत में हँसे तो तुम पर सब हँसेंगे और तुम बच जाओगे
हँसो पर चुटकुलों से बचो
उनमें शब्द हैं
कहीं उनमें अर्थ न हों जो किसी ने सौ साल पहले दिए हों
बेहतर है कि जब कोई बात करो तब हँसो
ताकि किसी बात का कोई मतलब न रहे
और ऐसे मौकों पर हँसो
जो कि अनिवार्य हों
जैसे ग़रीब पर किसी ताक़तवर की मार
जहाँ कोई कुछ कर नहीं सकता
उस ग़रीब के सिवाय
और वह भी अक्सर हँसता है
हँसा-हँसो जल्दी हँसो
इसके पहले कि वह चले जाएँ
उनसे हाथ मिलाते हुए
नजरें नीची किए
उसको याद दिलाते हुए हँसो
कि तुम कल भी हँसे थे
