The sun was already warming the sky as the Norris family packed up their car for a day by the sea. Gemma, dressed in a bright pink swimsuit with frills, buzzed with excitement.
"Daddy, are we there yet?" she asked for the third time, bouncing in her car seat and clutching her favorite sparkly unicorn.
Lando, in sunglasses and a casual white t-shirt, glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "Not yet, Gem, but soon. Patience, princess."
Gemma pouted for a moment, then turned her attention to Daniel, who was strapped into his baby seat. The infant wore a tiny blue sun hat, his chubby legs kicking in excitement as if he already knew he was in for a fun day.
Lily, sitting in the passenger seat, smiled as she checked her bag for the essentials: sunscreen, snacks, towels, and toys. She wore a flowing sundress over her black bikini, her hair tied up in a loose bun.
"I think we're ready for anything," she said, closing the bag and looking at Lando. "You brought the beach umbrella, right?"
Lando gave her a playful side-eye. "Do you think I'd forget something that important?"
"Yes," she teased.
He grinned. "Well, I didn't. It's in the trunk."
The beach was already bustling with families and surfers when they arrived. Lando set up their spot under the shade of a large blue umbrella while Lily spread out the towels. Gemma wasted no time running toward the water, her tiny feet kicking up sand.
"Gemma, wait!" Lily called. "Sunscreen first!"
Gemma groaned dramatically but returned, sitting impatiently as Lily lathered sunscreen on her.
"Done! Go have fun," Lily said, and Gemma bolted toward the waves.
Lando, holding Daniel in his arms, watched her with a proud smile. "She's fearless, just like her mom."
Lily smirked. "And stubborn, just like her dad."
"Touché."
As the day unfolded, Gemma splashed in the shallow water, laughing as the waves tickled her toes. Lando joined her, pretending to be a sea monster chasing her, which sent her into fits of giggles.
Lily sat on the sand with Daniel, letting him play with a small plastic shovel and bucket. He babbled happily, grabbing fistfuls of sand and marveling at the texture.
"You like the sand, don't you, little man?" Lily cooed, brushing some off his hands.
Lando returned, shaking water from his hair and flopping down next to her. "She's got more energy than I do."
"That's not surprising," Lily said with a laugh.
He leaned over, kissing her cheek. "You're missing out. The water's perfect."
"I'll go in when Daniel naps," she promised.
After a picnic lunch of sandwiches and fruit, Daniel dozed off under the shade of the umbrella, and Lily finally joined Gemma and Lando in the water.
Lily waded in, the cool waves lapping at her legs. Gemma squealed when she saw her.
"Mommy, come here!"
"I'm coming!" Lily said, splashing her way toward them.
The three of them played in the water, Lando lifting Gemma onto his shoulders while Lily laughed at their antics.
"Look, I'm taller than Daddy now!" Gemma declared proudly.
"Enjoy it while it lasts," Lando teased.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink, the family gathered their things and headed back to the car. Gemma was wrapped in a towel, her hair damp and messy from the water. She leaned her head against Lando's shoulder, her energy finally running out.
Daniel, still half-asleep, snuggled in Lily's arms.
"Did you have fun today, Gem?" Lando asked as he buckled her into her car seat.
"The best day ever," she murmured sleepily.
Lily smiled at Lando as they settled into the front seats. "It really was a good day."
Lando reached over, taking her hand in his. "I think every day with you and the kids is the best day ever."
Lily laughed softly, her cheeks flushing. "You're such a softie, you know that?"
"For you? Always," he said, starting the car.
