Jaime's POV

"Dearest? What are you's doin' up here?" I asked, setting my book aside.

"I's couldn't sleep and I's saw that you's weren't in your bunk so I's assumed you came here."

"Well for once you's assumed right."

"Hey!"

"Jus' statin' the facts my dear."

He rolled his eyes at me, quietly snickering.

"You's can come sit with me if you's want," I said.

"I'd love nothin' more."

He came over and sat next to me, taking a cigarette and lighter out of his pocket. He held the small flame to the end of the cigarette, the smell of smoke making its way in the air.

He doesn't usually smoke unless he's stressed, extremely angry, or extremely focused on cards.

He doesn't look angry and obviously we're not playing cards. Something's up.

"Spot. Can I's ask you's somethin'?"

"You's already did," he smirked.

"Don't start with me," I scolded.

He put his hands in the air and smirked at me again.

"Whatever you's say Princess."

I gave him a look.

"I'm done now," he chuckled, putting the cigarette to his lips. "What is it?"

"Why did you's come here. Not that I'm mad, I'm jus' wonderin'."

He took the cigarette out of his mouth and blew out the smoke.

"I's wanted to see you's early."

"Patrick. I'm not dumb. I's know you's don't jus' smoke to smoke. What's goin' on?"

A smile made its way to his face and the worry in his eyes momentarily faded as he put out the lit cigarette.

"You's remembered my name."

I put my hand on his cheek.

"Well of course. It's the name of the man I love."

He cupped my face and gave me a sweet kiss."

"Is breá liom tú, Jaime Kelly." (I love you)

"Jag älskar dig också, Patrick Conlon." (I love you too)

I held his hands and rested them on his lap.

"Do you's remember all those conversations on the dock we had when we were kids?" he spoke.

"Of course I's do."

Flashback: August 1892

Spot and I were sitting on the docks at sunset, just talking like we always did. The older boys are out in the city and the lodge house owner is at the bar, so we had the place to ourself. The dark clouds loomed over the river. We'll have to go inside soon.

"How do you's do it, Spot? The world clearly hates us. Even Mother Nature doesn't want us to have the one joy we get," I exclaimed, pointing to the clouds on the sky.
