For a long time we flew, nowhere near Avon or anywhere that I recognized. Oddly enough, I thought I'd flown everywhere, but all the hillsides and rivers I'd seen were new territory.
Daintily, we cascaded over rocky cliffs, small mountains and waterfalls until we crossed over an old city with tall old broken marble buildings that looked centuries old and abandoned. Ahead of us, Lucien and Alice circled around and began to drop down and land, sending a blast of dust into the air as they did. I crouched my legs, aching to touch the ground, but at the same time, my gut already missed the air. Demetrius lowered us to the ground with a slight jolt.
"Ugh, get this thing off me!" I panted, unbuckling all of the straps and harnesses in a haste, releasing myself from Demetrius as he just stood there watching amusingly.
"Well, I see you two made it out okay," Lucien teased walking over to us with Alice and Raven in tow.
I glared over to Demetrius who's attention had traveled elsewhere, eyeing all the buildings and rubble.
"Hardly!" I barked. "He just about killed us!"
Lucien laughed. I threw my arms over my chest glaring at Demetrius in the corner of my eye as he started to wander off, ignoring me, leaving his straps and harnesses dangling from him.
"Where are we Alice?" Raven said as she too wandered around, gazing skeptically into the windowless buildings.
Alice sighed and glanced around contently, "Oldteck. It was once a city to Fallen, but as you can see; it was destroyed centuries ago by the angels, abandoned ever since."
I gazed around, crunching over a hard piece of rubble under my boot. I kneeled down, and picked it up, dirt covering my hands. I made out a young woman's face, her mouth drooped sadly. It was the face of an old statue.
"The...angels did this?" I said gazing down at the cracked stone face in my hands.
"More accurately," Lucien said stepping forward. "The Capital; they just completely obliterated cities like this—great ones at that."
Alice nodded. "This is why we must win the war, Lilith. There is no more tolerance for the Capitals destructive decisions. They've destroyed more lives than any of the wars combined."
I dropped the stone statue face and stood, feeling shame burn a hole like acid through my gut.
"C'mon," Alice said waving us over. "We're to meet in that building over there." He pointed several yards over to a tall, leaning broken building, shed of its former beauty and stability. "Let's go, and stay alert.
"By the way, we weren't going to die," Demetrius said into my ear as we trudged through the dark building, the only lighting came from the open square holes in the walls that were once windows. "You didn't have to be so dramatic."
"You were a jerk," I said simply.
Demetrius snorted.
"It's not funny."
"What is this place?" Raven said as she glanced around at the wide room, a broken rusted chandelier hung above us, rocking back and forth on an old chain.
Lucien kicked at an old table that, with a groan, collapsed into dust and rubble. All of us jumped and sighed with relief when it was only him.
"It was an old church," Alice said matter of fact.
